I'd also like to add that for this plane (Boeing 787), JAL is the only airline that fits 8 seats in a row in economy. All other airlines using this plane fit 9 people across in a row. This translates to a wider economy seat and overall less people (less crowded feel) in economy.
JAL is the only airline we use and we live in Japan. If you're short it won't matter as much, but if you're tall then JAL offers the most legroom to Japan in economy at 33"-34". And as we all know, those extra few inches make a world of difference
I want to second this! We just got back from Japan on this route today. We live near LAX but travel to Kansai (Osaka area) frequently to visit family. JAL has great, direct flights. I'm 6'1" and yes, the legroom is great. Their service is great, too. I opt for a non-lactose meal and I feel like it's always a step above the competition.

Sorry for being a travel noob, but could I book this round trip ticket (LAX to KIX to LAX), then book another one to check out South Korea, but come back before the return to LAX? Trying to do a multi-city and seeing if this would be an option?

This route was about $600 on AA recently (2 or 3 months ago?) but totally worth the small extra cost to fly JAL instead.

Considering this - anyone know cost for choosing seats?

Almost not worth it, the Asiana flight goes through icn and is usually cheaper bc layover. Haven't looked at these dates tho, so don't quote me on that.

Do it! Japan is awesome to visit! And in my opinion your money can go a long long way there and everything feels like top of the line.

We flew nonrev American Airlines Dallas to Narita economy and I'm 6'2, it suuuuucked but Japan was totally worth squeezing into whatever was available.

On the way back we had to book on Japan Airlines to San Francisco and it was farking awesome. 3 meals, endless tea. Leg room, arm room, 65w power USB C. Felt like the whole plane was first class! I wished we had done JAL on the way there but seriously just find any time you can go and book the flight! Figure out the rest on the way there, great hotel rooms for 50 bucks a night and it scales up from there, travel in country is elegant and cheap. People are polite, food is amazing.

I heard their planes are built with fewer seats because the runways at Narita and Haneda are shorter so they can't carry as much weight on takeoff, don't know true that is but I'm thankful for it.

I've just booked and didn't get charged for seat selection.

Depends on the fare, but you won't get 2 free checked bags like JAL operated flights offer.
