I have about 6 pairs of those open ear headphones. Bose sounds the best music wise, but have low battery life. The other companies don't have as nice of sound, but can last a lot longer.
Now this is the thing- they are designed to be able to hear your surroundings while you bike or jug, but none of them is loud enough to hear music when you are outside. They are actually best used in an office/work environment when you need to hear your coworkers or when the phone rings.

Do you have any of the bone-conduction headphones like from Shokz? Curious if those fare any better in the outdoors

I bought the Ultra Open around Christmas and ended up returning them and keeping the Shokz Open Run Pro 2 (important that I emphasize the "Pro 2" part). The audio on the Shokz aren't as good, but the comfort and battery life for me at least won them out. I didn't like the dangling feeling of the Bose on my ear, and even though the audio quality of the Ultra Open are better than the OpenRun Pro 2's, I still went with the Shokz.

They're still on sale via Woot for $130

I love my Open Ears. If you're in a somewhat quiet neighborhood but want to be aware of your surroundings when you are walking, these are great. Don't expect to hear anything if you're on a main street with cars whizzing by.

To me, they're very comfortable. I often forget I have them in. I also like the physical clicky button to pause/play/skip music.

I would gladly pay full price for these again.

I considered these but ultimately went with the Nothing Ear Open after a lot of research. The Nothing's have multipoint and on-earbud controls for both playback and volume on a single earbud, a combination which I couldn't find on other true wireless open earbuds.

They're also quite less expensive than these. Since I don't have these Bose, I can't compare audio quality but you can find comparisons on YouTube. I use them mostly for podcasts so audio quality doesn't bother me and they sound good enough for music.

I have these, and the audio quality is good and they stay in place, but the microphones are absolutely terrible for phone calls and video calls.

I work at home, so I had dreams of comfortably wearing these during the day to listen to music and hop in and out of video meetings while connected to my computer. The microphones on these (even after software updates with "AI" doing voice enhancement) are just terrible. It sounds like you're talking with 1 cell phone bar, or like you're using a free pair of wired headphones from an airplane that you don't even know had a microphone. Every time I asked if people could hear me ok, I got a variation of "It sounds pretty terrible." And then as soon as I disconnected them, everyone said "ok, that's better."

For listening to music and podcasts while walking around, they're very solid, safe, and won't fall out. If you want to use them to talk on the phone or take video calls, you'll need another pair of headphones.

Been curious to try these these open type earbuds, especially for the office. Baseus had a Valentines day sale and people on their email list got a substantial discount on their MC1 open earbuds, so I grabbed a pair. Pretty good sound, but probably not as good as the Bose.
Not sure if I would spend $200+ on open earbuds as my daily driver. But in environments like the office, the gym or anywhere that you need to be aware of the world around you, they definitely have their uses.

Will Apple ever consider coming out with a version of something similar?

What's the advantage of these over similar earbuds with ambient mode turned on?

Avoid these if you EVER want to make/receive phone calls, they're HORRIBLE.

I tried them with Samsung S24u and Apple iPhone 14 and every SINGLE person went out of their way to tell me how bad the audio was on their end.

Music... They're damn good and very very comfortable...

Yep...I have the quiet comfort earbuds and it's surprising it has active noise cancelling but they do not block the outside noise on phone calls at all.

These were awesome for the week I kept them. They were great for running and listening to music while babysitting the kids. But at my gym they were useless as the music playing in the gym was so loud that I couldn't hear my music at all lol. So long as your gym doesn't play loud music (any powerlifting gym) these are excellent for comfort and convenience.
