Try checking the DOM on the bottom of the box. As someone mentioned earlier: sounds like production dates from 12/2024 and older are EXOS.
2/2025 are Barracuda, not sure about drives from 1/2025.

Or run CrystalDiskInfo to check what type of drive it is, as another poster mentioned: the exos drives should show up as : ST24000NM002H
the barracudas are : ST24000DM001

I guess it does not matter where it came from OH or KY and part numbers different from outside box vs actual drive …for Me it showed 02/2025 on box but on drive it showed just 2025… it is all barracudas they are shipping after 2024 stock. may be it is common to
Use barracuda and they just used exos for short period of time ? With just 1 year warranty ans higher temperature and slower transfer speeds compared to exos , I am not sure if it make sense to Mix and match few exos and few barracudas .. I also have iron wolf drives also

There's likely no official info because this model doesn't officially exist. Just like with "white label" drives in the WD externals, they don't intend for you to shuck them.

The benchmarks you provided are interesting. It looks like there's roughly 30MB/s difference between them, in sequentials. That's about double the 15MB/s difference I'd expect to see if these were the HAMR Exos drives. Despite the HAMR Exos drives being newer than the Exos X24, they're mostly a little slower. BTW, the big difference in random 4K writes is likely due to the fancier caching algorithms in the Exos line. They can only maintain that speed for a few seconds.

Streaming??? I'm skeptical, unless you work for Netflix.

Quote from investigate84 :
I wouldn't trust 5400rpm for UHD streaming
The highest bitrate UHD Blu-Ray is well under 20MB/s. Modern 5400RPM drives can hit roughly 10X that and should be able to maintain at least several times that, even on the innermost tracks.

yes, running 24/7. My Mac Mini M2 Pro runs as my primary workstation but also server which is the reason I felt NAS was a waste of $350. Why pay that and $120 more electricity per year when I can just run this 24TB drive via USB on my existing server.

Let me tell you, I am overwhelming this drive.
Seems unlikely. Are you doing like a dozen streams of different files?

Rereading what you wrote. Sounds like you're overwhelming the USB interface. Best buy says this drive is USB 3 gen 1. That's only 5gbps with a real world max speed of 400MB/s. Much higher than these drives should do, which is around 250MB/s. Check that your usb cable, and usb port. Could be bad cable or plugging into a slow port.

Thanks RikB for sharing!

Based on your CrystalDiskInfo, Exos drives have faster read/write speeds and run at cooler temperatures. Overall, Exos offer better performance and are likely to have a longer lifespan. From what I've read, Exos drives use CMR technology, while Barracudas rely on SMR.

I also came across a Reddit post mentioning that many 20TB shucked Barracuda drives failed after just 30–60 days in 24/7 NAS systems.

Found another way you can tell which drive is in the case if you just want to check without plugging it in. On the enclosures label it says "product of Thailand" above all the regulatory logos. If it has also has a line between those that says "Class 1 laser product" then it is a barracuda drive.
