I've had two of these flukes die on me. I like to repair things, but I couldn't even get the PCB out of this thing the way they latched it in. Some people have managed it on YouTube but I couldn't. The fact that there are YT videos telling you how you _might_ be able to get it open should tell you something.

I switched to Klein. The Klein was slightly annoying in that it doesn't seem to work with rechargeable NiMH batteries so I had to put an alkaline in it, but apart from that it's held up well. I bought one with both high and low voltage detection.

I prefer putting my dollars to product options that aren't designed in a way that makes repair difficult.

Alkaline batteries are 1.5 volts, rechargeable NIMH batteries are only 1.2 volts. Some devices are sensitive to voltage and need the full 1.5 volts to work properly.

I seem to wipe one of these out about once every two years. Never used any other brands.

The fluke 1AC is by far the best tic tracer/voltage dector. I've used around 20 ish different brands and models. As a professional electrician most of them last me a few months to 2 years. I've bought 3 different 1AC and all of them still work being 3 - 20 years old. The oldest fluke 1AC I have is around 20 years old. It stopped making sound a few years back but the light still lights up and I've never had a false reading that caused me to get shocked.

I've never had the 1AC model fail on me. I have 3 of them and the oldest is around 20 years old. I have had the Fluke 2AC model fail on me, which is their newer and slimmer model.

There are certain safety related items that arent worth saving a few cents buying no name brands. Is your life worth only a few cents? e.g safety goggles, hard hats, bicycle helmets. A voltage tester is one of them.

Kleins have some handy features like the pointer light and the temperature reading. But I've had around 5 or 6 of them fail on me so far. I currently have 1 that is still working but it's only about 2 years old. I still like to keep rebuying the one with the pointer light as it's nice for laying out people on tasks and showing them where to install things. I have 3 Fluke 1AC that are still working and none have failed. The oldest is 20 years old. The fluke 2ac tends to be more problematic, Ive had a few of them fail on me but they tend to out last the klein.

If you're in the market for Klein NCVT and don't mind the Lowes' YMMV deal hunting:

Select Lowes around me have this 2 pack on clearance for $11.50 to $25. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Klein-To...5015130133

Also seeing this 3 piece voltage tester kit for $19.47 . https://www.lowes.com/pd/Klein-To...5015130133

Hes asking for recs for generic alternatives since he claims the name brand ones don't last in his experience.

All I can advise is NOT to use any alkaline batteries in this tester. Instead, please use Lithium batteries.
Alkaline batteries leak and will corrode the entire circuit board and make this tester useless.

If it helps anyone who wants this tester, since it is shipped AND sold by Amazon, Lowe's will price match this online. I did it via the Lowe's chat service. It took a couple of minutes but it was fairly straightforward. That way I've got 90 days for a return and I like that flexibility. Just a thought…

This is made in Malaysia, which is decidedly not China. Though I did know an ethnically Chinese guy from Malaysia but that's a different story.

And for the guy who says this "flashes on cat 5"… say what? It reacts at min 90V. If you push 90V AC through then you'll get a tone I suppose but the max poe is like 57V DC. But this unit flashes the entire time it's on…that's just what it does…it's either flashing or solid/tone.
