It's a lot of guitar for $400. I have the Special version of this guitar and I play it daily, there aren't that many differences that would probably matter to someone in this price range (lower quality pots, lower-end floyd rose, lack of carved top, lower-end tuners). These guitars play extremely well and come setup well out of the box. The only negative things I can say about them is that they seem to sit on craigslist for awhile since it's not as well of a known brand as Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, etc..., and they don't come in 24 fret versions.

Very few people who are in the market for a beginner guitar would have used of a couple extra frets that they'll never play on. Very few guitar players need a two-octave range on the e. 24 frets have a place if you prefer the neck pickup to be a little closer to the bridge.

It's a fine low-end guitar, if a person wants to put up with the added complexity of a cheap Floyd Rose trem. If you don't know what that means, there are likely guitars that are better suited for you than this.

I know I'm going to get some hate for this, but why are these guitars so ugly? Is it strictly function over form?

Yeah, I know what a Floyd Rose is. I would say I am certainly passed beginner level, maybe a low-level intermediate.

I've been playing on an LTD EC-256FM and a MIM Fender Standard Strat off and on for a while. I like both the guitars and am in no hurry to replace them, but I feel at this point going with another "good bang for your buck" guitar would be at best a sideways move, which was my first thought on this guitar and why I was asking.

I've got two specials. Expect some fret sprout. May go away with humidity after a few weeks. My first special is fine. My second quilt one had sprout. Mostly gone now.

Pickups should be exact same. Thick and smooth. Almost wanna toss some in a Gibson. They're really good for rock and metal imo.

I told mine it was just a guitar case in the box.

These are made by Fender though- right?

So im trying to decide between one of these or one of the new SBS ss260. I need a shred guitar. I just got the 70th players strat with the vintage 59 pickups in nebula noire for christmas since i was playing it every day on my break at work all year and am in love with it. The ss260 has 2 humbuckers with splitters and treble bleed circuit and reverse headstock with floyd rose and locking tuners. Ive been playing for around 15 years now. Have my original squire strat i modded out and put a sh4-jb in the bridge, a special players HH jaguar, and my new 70th player strat. Need a METAL guitar or just something to shred and do dive bombs with. Ive been learning a lot of sick stuff since i got my player strat but its not really a metal guitar, i mean i mostly play blues, rock, punk, and funk. Always looking to learn and grow. Any cheap ibanez have what im looking for? Im looking for something thats mid range that i can learn to mod to perfection and do my own setups with also.

Here's another great option. Slightly worse pickups (my opinion), but neck-through with a 24 fret neck, great for shredding, and $20 cheaper. Same Floyd.

The SS260 isn't a bad guitar, but this or the Jackson are much better deals at these prices.

Ive been looking at this jackson also, i love the olive green color. Im gonna try to find a shop to play one at today and see how i like the neck and feel. It checks off all the needed boxes for me. Some wants though is an HH setup and coil splitting. Im sure the jackson is a much more solid guitar considering SBS has only released I believe 2 guitar models in their life span? They just have so much and look really awesome. I also like the reverse headstock, almost got myself the jimi hendrix strat just for that when i was trying to decide what strat to get myself when i bought the 70th players. Ive been hoping for a good jackson to drop in price recently and this seems like the one that could be it. Would you recommend the jackson over this EVH guitar though? I wouldnt mind spending the extra 20 bucks if this guitar was a lot better quality. I also like the EVH pickups. Also is there much of a difference in tone in poplar bodys than alder? the SS260 with poplar body is like a hundred bucks less than the alder. Thank you for the information.

I don't think either one is objectively "better". They both use the same trem. The EVH has a roasted neck and a nicer top, but the Jackson is thru-body and 24 frets. Whichever one makes you stoked to play it is the one you should get.

Guitars are more about look and feel than specs. Too often you'll see a guitar that looks great online but the neck feels weird in your hand, or it doesn't hang comfortably against your body, or it doesn't sound the way you wanted it to, so you don't play it much. Or you'll buy something in a color you don't like because the specs are great, and then you don't play it much because it's ugly.

There are about a million different electric guitars out there. Finding the one that you want to stare at AND pick up AND is comfortable to play is difficult, but it's not impossible. You usually have to go through a bunch of guitars before you find it, though.

Body wood hardly matters to the sound. Neck wood can matter a little, but everyone uses maple except Gibson. Really thin necks can lose sustain on basses, especially 5-string basses, but it doesn't matter as much on guitars since the strings are so much lighter.

Reverse headstocks don't make much difference when you've got a Floyd because of the locking nut. On a guitar with no locking nut, it can make the bass strings a bit softer to bend, and it makes doing the intro to Iron Man easier because there's much more string to push on.

Pickups and strings are about 85% of the tone. Pickups are easy to swap, but it's easy to spend hundreds of dollars needlessly when most of the tonal differences are within the range of a basic bass/treble EQ. There's a Chinese 4-knob EQ/booster usually branded "Rowin", "VSN" or "Amuzik" that you can find under $30 and works great. Metal guys like to use a Tube Screamer for the bass cut, but it also muddies up the sound, and you can get a better effect with just EQ in my opinion.

Have fun learning to shred. I hope this helps! (Rep me if it did.)
