I've seen a lot of reports about Boox devices randomly breaking while sitting unused on tables and then support claims it was user caused damage and won't warranty them. I don't think I would consider buying one of these unless they offer a warranty that covered accidental damage, and then I'd factor that in to the price. There have been a lot of people looking to buy ereaders recently with Amazon's changes, and Boox's quality control and predatory warranty gateways seems to be hindering their customer adoption rate.

Left my Boox off for a few months. Doesn't turn on anymore. It's a $400 brick now.

To me, the issue is that without being able to download the books and having a physical file, you don't own the books anymore. It's just a license. It also makes it pretty much impossible to use an amazon ebook with any other reader, unless it has a kindle app, which most are unable to do. It locks people in to Amazon's ecosystem and is very anti-consumer.

The one "killer app" as it were for Boox was the ability to install apps. Granted I don't know that I'd install many but just having the ability to load in different apps like say the Viz app would be nice.

Either way, $250 was a lot of money that I could spend on other stuff so back it goes. I am leaning toward a Kobo even if it means I may have to do more manual work.

This was a terrible decision by Amazon. However, it is still pretty easy to download the book to the Kindle first and then get it into Calibre. All my ebooks are safely backed up and can be put on any device I decide on in the future including a Kobo. Not letting Amazon or anyone else control my library.

The problem is that buying from a reputable seller doesn't protect you much. Many of the reported screen issues happen after even Amazon's return window. If a product's quality is so low that 3rd-party insurance is mandatory, that's a bad buy. Onyx has been outright defrauding countless customers across multiple product lines for years now. They shouldn't be rewarded for doing that to people. Chinese companies that follow this model of defrauding the world should not be allowed to operate in the west.

Try a different (slower) charger. I found that mine doesn't charge AT ALL with a quick one

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but tariffs apply to all products manufactured in China. So even if you buy directly from a company based in another country, like let's say Germany, as long as the item originated from China, you will pay tariffs. I recently bought an item from Germany. Technically, I should not pay any import duties for products below $800. Since it was made in China, UPS stopped my package and demanded to pay import duties plus brokerage fees. I purchased an item after the introduction of new tariffs. The country of origin is mentioned on a declaration form filled out by a seller. I believe U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) mandates that, in addition to a tariff code and declared value.
