in your case, 3 month vs 8GB extra RAM, I feel waiting is better.

When I run LLM (8b or 14b) locally, 16GB is not enough for multi-tasking.
Maybe he didn't buy it for LLm?

For $250 more you can get the MacBook Pro 14" with the M4 SOC.

The MacBook Air value is only good at it's base model. Once you add RAM or Storage, the value goes out the door when it overlaps the Pro model that are a significant better value.

$250 is 23% higher at this price point. Not exactly trivial.
Might as well go with the 1tb version for just another $171 at that point

Value and performance... go with the M4 for $899.

I don't see this $1099 for a year old generation model a value. If $899, then maybe.

What is your point? Apple MacBook Air M4 is $899. This older generation M3 for $1099 is 22% more for a little more RAM and storage. Is this trivial?

My point. This is not a good deal for $1099.

Seems this would be a good option in lieu of a M4 Macbook Pro with 24GB RAM. Main reason being that the processor is not throttled under load, so this laptop can be used as a workstation after being plugged in to a dock.

MB Pro is also a heavy, unwieldy machine compared to the Air.

I have a 64GB M1 Max 16" which can run ollama pretty good.

I bought the Air because I had to go on a trip and finish refactoring some code while I was abroad for 3 weeks. I needed the portability/battery life and that project paid me $25k. So $25K in consulting to me is more important than waiting 3 months. $1099 was deducted as business expense.. Now if I get another side gig like that, I'll upgrade my 16" to an M4 Max.

So no regrets bro. No regrets. I usually only buy new computers if I have a job that can pay for it. As a I said, a year is a long time. Time doesn't matter if there is money on the table to be made. And I wanted the lightest thing I can have in my carry on luggage. With cameras, storage, clothes, it is hard to keep under 12lbs.

love how apple gatekeeps external monitor support as a way to get ppl to upgrade.... so pathetic m5 will support 3 displays and the lid closed... m6 will support 4 displays with lid open !
My understanding is that they want to allow high-quality multi monitor support, or none at all. Allowing MST would allow lower resolutions/frequencies on multiple monitors by splitting the bandwith. Therefore, the only way to get more monitors is to upgrade the gpu, which is where the newer chips come in. It is frustrating since not many of us are buying 6k displays, let alone TWO of them.

I'm surprised that you aren't comparing this 24GB M3 with 16GB M4. Both have 512GB of storage and sell for $1099 (EDU store). Personally I would choose M4 and I would never compare it to MBP because MBP is a brick, I have two of them. Also where are all those people who claimed that 8GB of ram is all you need?

On the contrary, I actually think the base MBP is the odd buy and the beefed up Air is one of the better configs. If someone is a pro user then they probably need more than the base MBP config, and if someone does not have those requirements then the Air is a much better form factor for use as a laptop. I'd personally go Air over Pro every time unless choosing an upgraded Pro config.
