These (26GB) are EXOS Enterprise drives not the crappy non-Pro Barracudas like the 20-24TB models with only 1-year warranty. Seagate doesn't make a 26TB Barracuda.

I ordered one, says it'll arrive Thursday. I'll update this post with what I find inside.

Edit: ST26000DM000 mfg date 02/2025. Seagate website indicates the serial # on the drive is a Barracuda w/ 1yr warranty. Oh well, looks like the days of discount exos are gone, and I'll be returning this one.

Interesting. I bought the same 24TB drives from B&H Photo and they were Exos X24 24TB. They only have a one year warranty but otherwise they run well.

While that is true, seagate did just update their website at the end of february with model info on the new drives and they state that barracudas are now "available in up to 24tb". It would be unusual for them to suddenly expand that only a couple weeks later.

Why are we arguing about shucking and what's inside? Why not use it as-is, connected to RPi5/PC? In a practical application, if you're storing a media (say, video file), it doesn't matter how it's connected to your NAS, speedwise, right? Trying to understand the itch to shuck

Because most of us have NAS already that we put drives in. Using it as is with a Pi is not what majority of people are going to do. Either way you use it we want the best drive we can get.

And yet it does come with a 1yr warranty (although other models come with 3yr)

If these are exos, it's significantly cheaper to shuck them over buying new when filling a NAS. You get a much shorter warranty this way, but a 26tb exos is $500+ for a brand new bare drive which really adds up when you're buying 4+ drives.

From my experience, drives tend to fail within the first few months or end up lasting past the warranty period, so I'm okay with the gamble.

Edit to add: also running multiple drives in a raid array with a NAS that has a 10gb NIC will be faster than a single drive via usb. Most shucking are not using just a single drive or JBOD setup.
