These (26GB) are EXOS Enterprise drives not the crappy non-Pro Barracudas like the 20-24TB models with only 1-year warranty. Seagate doesn't make a 26TB Barracuda.

I ordered one, says it'll arrive Thursday. I'll update this post with what I find inside.

Edit: ST26000DM000 mfg date 02/2025. Seagate website indicates the serial # on the drive is a Barracuda w/ 1yr warranty. Oh well, looks like the days of discount exos are gone, and I'll be returning this one.

Desktop drives continue to be Type A, seeing as the max speed is 5 Gbps, the port is more stable, and most people prefer the cable taking up an A port than using a more extensible C port.

Have heard some drive makers talk about throwing in a C changer dongle, but haven't seen any go through with it.

What's the issue with Barracuda drives, and why would that not be desirable for shucking/using in a NAS?

Edit: are Barracudas kind of the equivalent of WD Blues, e.g. slower?

Are these HAMR? At what size do they start using that tech (because I want to avoid it).

Anything in the 26-30TB should be consisted using HAMR.

SMR is slow, HAMR is not as bad. I suspect HAMR to be okay.

Unlike SMR, HAMR is more of a necessary evil to raise capacity. At some point you have to choose because I don't think CMR will make it to 40TB. At some point all drives will have some variant of HAMR (or patent bypassing similar) save for old manufacturing lines.

I certainly would never opt for SMR over HAMR unless doing glacier archival.

Very likely. I believe the highest capacity CMR non-HAMR drive Seagate makes is 24TB.

I'm waiting to hear back when the first person receives this and confirms it's an EXOS inside so I can order one that day and end up getting the first batch they switch over to Barracudas 😂🥴

Oh dang that sucks! I'm assuming these aren't much different in terms of performance other than maybe slightly lower speeds and maybe worse heat if they aren't using helium filled drives. That said, this is still a killer price for a 26TB drive even if they're aren't EXOS drives.
