Edit: ST26000DM000 mfg date 02/2025. Seagate website indicates the serial # on the drive is a Barracuda w/ 1yr warranty. Oh well, looks like the days of discount exos are gone, and I'll be returning this one.

I have personally seen them behind closed doors at trade shows talk about increasing RPM and bring back SSHD caching, which they have touted privately "could deliver early SSD performance" - but as of yet I haven't seen any hit the market.
Could they? Absolutely. A HAMR, non-SMR 10k RPM with a 8GB cache is totally possible.
SSHD caching was a cool feature but I think its time has passed. It was good when we were running programs (especially the OS) from the drive. I don't see it helping much with the way hard drives are generally used today. I'm not sure how much it helps but some WD drives are starting to come with their OptiNAND.
The strength of mechanical storage is cost though. If it costs a lot upfront, or costs more in the long-term due to energy consumption, then it has lost its purpose.
I'd rather have a 5,400 RPM drive than a 10k one for these reasons.

To be clear this isn't in the market yet, but VPs have touted efforts at conferences.
I think small no-SQL file access for AI is why these techs are being bantered about. For SOHO AI servers that can't afford 8TB or higher SSD.

Umm, maybe return it? Mines running like a champ.
I just grabbed one, will return if these are new stealth barracudas. I also grabbed the 24tb and lucked out with an exos with a non 2025 date and haven't had any issues so far, have not shucked it yet.
The drive was working great for 2-3 weeks but now is constantly disconnecting. It also sounds like stuff is being read/wrote without anything on the system accessing the drive.
I have another cable coming tomorrow and am going to try it connected to my PC too. On my Mac, it's virtually unusable.
This has been a horrible experience.
This is Seagates new quantum storage Harddrive.. It's not a EXOS or a Barracuda, It's there new Schrodinger line. It is both a EXOS and a Barracuda until someone shucks one.
