I want to get this, but the last atomic drill i have destroyed first gear will minimal use and light work after two years. Now it only works in second gear. I think I'll wait for a deal in the XR models. Seems like an okay price though.

I have the XR of this drill and my high gear has failed like OP. Not a commercial user but I do use the drill often. Out of warranty (over 3 years old). That made it the second dewalt 18v drill that had a failure in 5 years for me. My dewalt recip saw also failed recently with only light to moderate use over the 5 years. Sadly I chose the dewalt family as I bought a large tool bundle with some XR tools and added to the collection. I am so heavily invested with a wide variety of their tools its difficult to change but I have started with Rigid. If I could go back in time I would go with either Milwaukee or Rigid. Rigid has LSA.
I don't have any 20V system. I have Bosch 12V so I am looking to get good deal on the 20V Max stuff
Then I would very carefully think what to commit to. It's kinda exciting to start out fresh. Don't base it one a good deal for a drill... think about the whole system, consider 40V, other applications besides tools (yardwork, camping, etc).
There are sometimes kit deals that come with 3 or 4 tools, several batteries, and a charger, which may be heavily discounted over buying the individual components. Of course, look closely at the included tools to make sure they are what you (think you) actually want, but can be a good entry point into the system of your choice.

I'm a big DeWalt fanboy and have a wall of black and yellow, but this drill is one of the worst tools I've bought from them. I bought it for easy and lightweight uses around the house: hanging frames, assembling cheap furniture, driving wood screws into pine, stuff like that. Even those tasks it's a real POS and struggles to get through the job, putting most of the torque into my wrist and into unsecuring the bit holder instead of into the job. Speaking of, the bit holder ring that you rotate to secure the jaws onto a bit is TRASH. It takes an absurd amount of force to tighten and then constantly loosens itself during use.
I hate this drill. Even if it was $10 I wouldn't buy it. God it's frustrating.
Get an adapter for the battery system you have, to Dewalt tools. Plenty of them for about 10 bux on Amazon etc.
While this is a suggestion, I think it's good to disclose that adapters will drain your batteries when attached. Complete depletion of batteries are terrible for the cell health. I learned the hard way after buying multiple adapters.

Depends on the adapter. Those that also include circuitry with USB ports, yes. Dumb adapters that just pass through the voltage, no. Keep the adapter on the tool, not the battery, to be safe.

I really do not need it......... I have 3 of Dewalt Drills already......yet, I want to have the smallest one for my small hand.....
Dang.... I just bought it
I bought their task light that comes with a usb cable. The usb cable failed. I contacted them about it. They sent me a new task light and usb cable without asking for any questions.

what alternatives are there? what companies should be supported if we choose to oppose the tool monopoly?
