I bought a streamliner semi hollow and it needed a lot of adjustment. Later on I bought two electromatic solid bodies and they were perfect right out of the box, so that's the info I can give you. But I will say that I sold the streamliner to guitar center for $20 less than what I got for it on adorama.

I bought the single barrel burst version of this when it was $449. It was actually perfect out of the box. No fret sprout, no buzzing/muted strings. Was actually surprised. And it's beautiful.
Not saying everyone's will be so nice out of the box, but I wouldn't hesitate on it. Wish I'd gotten it for $50 less Smilie

What's the difference between the electromatic center block and the electromatic classic? Is the classic more of a true hollow body?

Edit: Looks like that has a center block too so nevermind. I believe the body is slightly larger on the classic. Anywho, is there any rhyme or reason to the numbering of their model numbers, a hierarchy of sorts? With most brands, the higher the #, the better the model. Kind of interested in Gretsches and may jump on one soon.

The ONLY thing I think the numbers can consistently represent is if it starts with a 6 it is part of their "professional line". Electromatic start with a 5, and I believe Streamliners start with a 2. Also, the letters at the end indicate some of the features of the guitar:
T indicates it has a tremolo system.
FM indicates Flame Maple top

They distinguish the guitars mainly by product lines. Starting from the highest quality and highest price:

Custom Shop: All custom made in the USA. Some might be built in small limited runs and a lot may be one offs.
Professional: Highest end regular production models. All made in Japan and over $2,000. Subdivided in to Vintage Select and Player.
Electromatic: upper middle range. Good quality for a moderate price.
Streamliner: Most affordable line.

The numbers may have meant things at some point, but the general idea is that they came from catalog numbers way back when Gretsch made more than just guitars, and the guitars were all in the 6000 series catalog numbers. If they mean more than that now, I don't think anyone outside of Gretsch has really decoded it... unless I'm wrong in which case I'd love to know Smilie

Both have humbucker pickups so they should be pretty minimal noise.
