This player holds its value well for a reason: With any of the consoles, it won't play Dolby vision blurays in Dolby vision even if the TV supports it, it'll fall back to generic HDR. This player works properly for that. It's complete bogus as Xbox at least supports Dolby vision for streaming and games, but it's a different "profile" or something. And for putting a blue ray drive into a PC, it's only good for ripping bluerays for Plex, windows can't play them natively unlike DVDs, you have to use cyberpowerdvd or something because of the DRM and those programs are just laughably buggy these days. I believe the DRM also only works on Intel processors up to 10th or 11th gen and anything beyond that you'd have to rip the blue rays into mkvs, and that's fine for folks who are technologically savvy and maybe already into the homelab scene, but not everyone is willing to do that

This is hilarious. People who don't own a high end AV system will already ignore this. Your comments are not as useful as you think it is.

They offer something McDonald's doesn't. Blue ray player doesn't offer anything I can't aquire digitally
Are you acquiring these digital files legally? Obviously not since you can get them "anywhereeeeee".

Streaming services compress sound and video and claim it to be full 1440p when in actuality it never is. You also have to deal with licensing issues. You have never grown up in a time of physical media and it shows. Enjoy using your plex servers and streaming etc when your network is down or your set up fails. I'll enjoy playing UHD discs almost lossless with a top of the line player. People who buy this player are looking to use this in a home media set up and play their physical media disks while you torrent and throw files around your plex server and talk shit on a deal forum regarding the existence of physical media.

I don't think there's anything to know. There's nothing it can do that a PC or AVR or media server on a router/ etc can't do. I can have access to anything in the world and not take up space with ugly blue boxes 😂
To this day, nothing beats the picture quality of a 4k Blu ray on a premium player like this. Steaming has a lot of compression, so even 1080P/ HD Blu Ray content looks better than 4k streamed content in my experience.

If you haven't compared them, or don't have an eye for picture quality details, then it's all the same. But once you see the difference, you can't un-see it.

If you don't understand the need for this then go back to downloading YIFY rips and playing it on your media server.

The only way to play full FEL 4K blu rays is with this player or a sketchy player from AliExpress that has some set up curve and costs $150+ and a Remus that was acquired illegally.

It doesn't say what model in the description. 2 people have already asked seller who has not replied. What would you get if you bought it?

I own a mid grade AV system and have absolutely 0 use for blu ray player.
Then you also have absolutely 0 reason to post here.

Anyway,
I've been happy with my Sony UBP-X700, but with players getting scarce these days I'm thinking it might be worth picking up one of these as a backup.

There are places they can be found that's all I'm gonna say.
And you can always rip them after renting for cheap somewhere if you really want to be straight and narrow.
You realize ripping a rental is also not legal, right? Have you gotten so far into this that you've lost touch with reality? People are asking for a completely legal way to get this content with these features. Even if you eventually come up with an answer that doesn't sidestep copyright laws, the more complicated this gets, the more it's worth it for some of us to just pay some money and not worry about all of the extra time. Time is valuable too...

Anyone still use this? There's something called "Netflix". Look that up.
I looked it up. Half the movies I own on Bluray or UHD are nowhere available streaming and the rights were pulled years ago.

I currently have a 1080p projector and a LG C1 in the same setup. I currently use an Oppo 95 for all discs except 4k. I use a Sony UBP-X700 for 4k discs. HDMI video out goes directly to the C1 and the HDMI audio out goes to a Marantz AV8801. I am not ready to upgrade my processor or projector just yet. I will eventually but I am still happy with it.

Are there any advantages with this UB820 versus the X700 I am currently using in my current setup? I was planning on upgrading from the X700 when I upgrade my processor and projector. I don't watch a lot of 4k discs now because I prefer the 120" projector for movies compared to the 65" C1.

Because unless you are 45+ this purchase lacks common sense and is a waste of your money if you understand how to turn tech on... Again blu ray player on things already that do more. I could download the content with PC and set up a Plex server or media server on my router for tv to make use of. I could just run HDMI from my PC. I could pay for a $100 dollar streamer to have atomos/hdr10 etc etc and have access to ever single movie and tv show ever made if I know what I'm doing. The reason I comment is maybe one person will stop and think... Oo maybe I don't need one.. there's another way I can do this. And save them money.
There's different level to things, just like there's bottom shelf alcohol and premium spirits.

How are Blu-ray players still a thing? Console is almost the same price with more functionality. Can buy a drive for PC for far less and constantly have the best software.. just a very outdated piece of equipment. Also just stream it.
Console sucks for gaming compared to pc
