an xbox or ps5 will delivery same quality or Netflix in Dolby Vision 4k
decoding blu-ray is no longer rocket science
people like apple sheeps wasting money is always a sheer curiosity
BTW it's stilly to compare this to a game console, they don't support dynamic HDR.
FYI you're not really taking advantage of Dolby Vision on Netflix, even HDR on disc will have better quality.
Not to mention the audio is far inferior to disc.
And you can always rip them after renting for cheap somewhere if you really want to be straight and narrow.
Are there any advantages with this UB820 versus the X700 I am currently using in my current setup? I was planning on upgrading from the X700 when I upgrade my processor and projector. I don't watch a lot of 4k discs now because I prefer the 120" projector for movies compared to the 65" C1.
The HCX chipset & Optimizer on the 820 would be a benefit especially for your PJ.
A good thing is those two are on the 420 also so you don't need this.
Upon saying that, if you're not having any of the known issues and or don't mind switching on/off Dolby Vision, it may not be worth it to switch.
Out of curiosity, why don't you just use the X700 for all disc, it upscales legacy discs to 4K?

That would be like getting a game console to play movies!

Blu-Ray is a pixel perfect format. All these "high end" devices are doing is modifying source content.

Anyway, for all of my ripped content, I can play them without issue via Infuse software on my Apple TV. Now, I haven't dug too deep into this; I have only a few 4K blu-rays but haven't really checked their HDR format, or whether they even have HDR. Most of my purchases have been regular blu-rays.
Now, in my use case does it make sense to buy this? I'm tempted to have something that will be able to play 4K Dolby Vision; I know my PS5 or Xbox can't handle those. But Infuse software can play various DV profiles. So if I simply rip my next 4K DV purchase, will DV be maintained?
Do I still need this given my use case? Any insight would be appreciated.
