I have both. Straight is for getting down deep, when the ground is hard. D is for moving a lot of loose earth. The leverage on each is what makes it good for that use.

Best shovel that I ever owned when you need real strength that would break other shovels. It is overkill for light duty work because it is all steel.

Just for everyone's benefit, I have both - This steel handle and the flex fiberglass. These do not replace each other and I use either one based on the task at hand. Both are equally strong and if you do yard work all the time, you may need both.

What are the different use cases?

I like the D handle better. Didn't think I would, but now I can't imagine going back. If you are undecided, I would just get this deal and then wait for a deal on the D handle and see which one you prefer.

As for leverage as someone else pointed out, I don't notice a difference. In some ways, I think having a shorter shaft is better, at least ergonomically. There is a limit to what a shovel can do. If you need that much leverage, you are better off using a mattock or pick axe first.

The one weak spot of all of these shovels is the section near the scoop (on top). You will undoubtedly scrape this part the most on the ground/rocks, so the paint gets scraped off. Then it rusts and gets weak. Then it breaks. But that's after a lot of use.

In for 2... Bought 1 for my wife and 1 for my wife's boyfriend for when they decide to cash in my life insurance. I didn't need a 3rd one because, just like usual, the boyfriend's boyfriend is just gonna watch...

I've had this shovel for almost 20 years and I love it. The blade is a lot bigger than the standard shovel which makes it so much more convenient to dig with.
It's still going strong for light duty work around the yard and helping out at friends' houses. Every time I'd set it down, someone would want to use it, and then try to "not give it back". Some nicks and scratches in the painted finish over the years, but no issues with rust.

Not a year ago I bought a Stanley shovel and a 6 pack for 5 bucks each at grocery outlet. Might check there first if ya got one in your town.

Agree tho honestly everyone should probably have a shovel like this. I never realized how much easier it makes digging etc until i got one of these myself some years ago. It may be too heavy for some folks tho.
