Great deal! I almost bought this but I really want the 6 disc set that includes Star Trek 5 and 6 (Undiscovered Country is my all-time favorite).

Unfortunately not very good transfers with no audio upgrade!
If you're a big fan, yes it's the best available at this time.

Not sure why the downvotes here. ST (TOS at least) clearly never took itself too seriously. Just rewatched 1-5 over the last month, it is amazing how much hamming some of the main actors were doing on camera and clearly just for fun (DeForest Kelley especially). No one was trying to win an Oscar....except for Shatner.
At least with the movies, with the original cast, I didn't think the acting was necessarily any less than the other aspects of the films, like the story, etc. So, the comment just seemed like a jab at the actors. Or maybe a jab at ST itself. It's hard to know when so little was said. I'm not an expert on Trek or film. While I watch and like all the Trek movies, naturally I like some more than others.

The hamming, are you referring to the comedy injected into some of the later films? Was it started in Voyage Home or especially Final Frontier? I figured it was due to the director.

Acting wise I think the first 3 are hard to beat.
Agreed, but I enjoyed the performances of Christopher Lloyd and Ricardo Montalban as a kid.

You aren't too far off with it being director related. You can tell the Voyage Home script was heavily influenced by the fact it was trying to hit a broader audience for the movie season and the fact the Challenger accident happened earlier in that year.

I personally didn't interpret it that way (but I could be wrong). I took it like someone saying "you don't eat cheesecake because it's healthy." Suggesting (whatever) isn't the aspect you should be focused on. That statement to me suggests a true fan because they don't let the weaker elements take away from the final production. "Greater Than the Sum" kinda stuff Wink

Honestly outside of Patrick Stewart or Avery Brooks most of the core actors in ST (across the franchise) weren't exactly classically trained or stage talent. Suggesting most aren't the greatest actors in Hollywood doesn't seem like much of a jab but a fair statement.

FWIW I just watched V last week, not sure how many people could have liked that Wink At least as a ST film. If it was a standalone Mad Max / Blackhole knockoff I probably would have enjoyed it more. Still glad I watched it top to bottom through.

Referring to 2 - 5 (even a few times in 1), not just the comedy parts but the moments where the main actors would look directly at the camera (4th wall breaking style), do a evil smirk after (clearly) not taking that serious moment seriously. There were too many of those cases to count. Like they knew the scene couldn't be reshot and their reaction was not getting edited out. Kelley and Nimoy especially, even in 3 and 4 where Leonard Nimoy was the director this was taking place. Koenig and Takei too.

I'm afraid I must be more of a simpleton because I've watched them all dozens of times and I never noticed any of that. A far deeper analysis that is beyond me. When I'm speaking to the Internet I try to always warn others that I'm not an expert because there's always tons of people that know far more than I do.

Now I guess I'll try to remember the next time I'm watching them to look for looks into the camera and smirks. Maybe, I did notice all of it but never thought about what it meant or even a second time about it. Or, maybe, since I'm sarcastic and have a dry sense of humor, when I mentioned comedy parts, I was actually including both the direct jokes and the subtleties that I think you are on about.

Just today I tried to watch Room 237 which is a movie about The Shining as I thought, "Oh, I love that movie, this should be interesting." I learned that I don't know anything at all about the movie as they proceeded to analyze it in slow motion pointing out all these things that Kubrick deliberately put into the film, including one scene where Kubrick himself's image is in the clouds. And symbolism of the Holocaust. Twas not for me, and I bailed out halfway.

I'm not an expert at all (in ST or film making in general) but I can definitely spot a behavior shift of an actor acting then 2 seconds looking into the camera like Jim from The Office then doing a '**** eating grin.'

DeForest Kelley, more so but Leonard Nimoy too. Kelley after '2' seemed to be really leading into the 'I'm too old for this vibe' but not as McCoy...whose character clearly also had that same theme BUT as an actor he did not present these two moments the same. There was a few of those moments in 1 as well but not so obvious.

I think the subtleties are where it really shines. You can tell the actors were also having fun, which I always enjoy.

I probably would do the same but I haven't seen that myself. May have to look it up.

I've watched all of the original crew Star Trek movies and series many times, except #5 which I've seen twice, and there is no 4th wall staring or talking to the camera. So I don't think you missed anything. It's someone reading things between the lines that aren't there. Some of us like the actors' hamming and campy style. I wouldn't change anything about the actors' performances. It was the actors/characters/music that got me through #5 and certainly not the story or Shatner trying to make it funny. "I know this ship like the back of my hand" BONK.

Christopher Lloyd and Ricardo Montalban played kids in Star Trek? I remember them playing adults. Big Grin

If you're watching Star Trek for the strength of the acting you're doing it wrong.
I don't know, some of those later films I definitely wouldn't watch for the storylines.....
Christopher Lloyd rocked as the Klingon Commander, it's hard to believe just how good Doc was in the role.
