For those who only want cash, not points:

$1000 cash back less:
- $95 annual fee
- $50-100 opportunity cost for spending $5000 on a card that only gives 1%cb when you could have gotten 2-3%cb.

Still over $800 tax-free profit. Not bad at all.

Considering it. I have one more application before I hit chase 5/24, then wait for a boosted amex gold or platinum bonus.

Any 0% apr period on this?

Will they treat a tax payment at pay1040 as a cash advance? Most credit card vendors treat it as a purchase.
The offer is supposed to be available online starting 04/03.
Not only is it in OP's message, it's also in the subject. Good grief.

Chase considers that to be churning abuse. They're fully aware then that (in their eyes) you were simply applying for the card just to get the bonus and then attempting to cancel it. To them, the odds are high that you will try to pull that again. They could flag your account(s), cancel it altogether (including any other Chase cards you have), and ban you from ever applying for another card, let alone any bonuses. Sounds like you got away with it with Capital One, but Chase and Amex are not as merciful.

As such, it is general consensus in the credit card bonus community to wait for that second annual fee to post before attempting a cancelation or downgrade.
Thank you! I was not aware of this. Reading more about Capital One Venture X on reddit, looks like it was helpful that I was downgrading and not cancelling, but I'll absolutely keep this in mind moving forward.

Someone has mentioned a longer term higher spend offer? Is it like the Amex 8k/6mo? It is far easier for me to consistently reach $1333 in CC expenses a month than $1666.

Odd that I applied and was denied am not in violation of the 5/24 rule, have an outstanding credit score, and am fairly certain (but not 100%) it's been more than 48 months since receiving the bonus. I did sign into my Chase personal account to apply. Anyone else have issues getting approved?
Same as you. I got denied yesterday for too many credit limit increase requests in the past 12 months as I do that for all my credit cards every 6 months. I called the reconsideration line a few hours later and they approved me.

gibsonbass is wrong. You don't need to close, you can simply downgrade.

So I can downgrade me csr to preferred and get 100k points? That doesnt seem likely. Can you carry both variants of this card at once? can you get the bonus for the preferred if you have the reserve and its been 4 years since open?

No, no, no.

I suggest that you read the terms of the offer and also read the thread.

I signed up and didn't get instant approved. Says I'll get a letter. Anyone know what that means. I previously had a sapphire card and downgraded to freedom 5 days prior.

Darn only a month, I won't be eligible until Oct or Nov.

I applied online. Chase sent me a letter saying I needed to contact them if it was really me. I called they asked a bunch of security questions. Told me they would get back to me. Weeks later nothing, I called them again and I think she redid the application. They then send me a link to upload my id. I uploaded my State drivers license, valid and not expired. Nothing! So after 5 days I call and am told on the phone my ID was rejected and "there is no more review and nothing I can do" she said. Biggest PITA ever!

I went to capital one and got a venture card. I don't appreciate chase pre approving me and then hitting me with a hard inquiry before saying my real drivers license isn't good enough. Telling me there is nothing I can do and hanging up the phone on me!

Credit scores - 784
Same experience but for the biz card offer a few months ago. Turned in all ID docs in the branch even. Every call just said "under review" until finally the offer timed out after several weeks and they said the app was no longer eligible for the bonus. Complete bullshit.

Let's assume I reach 5K spend with 3 big purchases and got the 100K welcome bonus points. Now if I end up returning one of the big purchase that helped reach 5K, would chase claw back the welcome bonus or only the points that I received for that purchase will be taken back and I still keep the 100K welcome bonus. Anyone with similar experience in past?

Anyone have similar experience in the past and know what chase did with welcome bonus?

You have until promo end to meet the spend, so just keep spending. If not met within the 3 months, then it'll be clawed back.

You downgrade the card after 1 year passes and the next annual fee ($95) posts. At that point, once you see the annual fee posted, call or message Chase and tell them you want to downgrade product-change the Sapphire Preferred card to either the Freedom Flex or Freedom Unlimited card. They'll waive/refund the $95 annual fee, and will send you the downgraded card in the mail.
i got the sapphire preferred back in 2020, got the bonus, and at some point downgraded to freedom unlimited.

now that i'm doing the bonus again, should i downgrade or cancel this second card after a year?
