No comment on these specific units but if you're having problems with mold on any AC, you should just turn it to fan mode for 20m or so before shutting off.

All AC's work by transferring heat from one side of the unit to the other side, as part of this process the coils on the inside of the room will be ice cold (so they can absorb the heat in the room and move it to the outside) moisture will condense on the cold coils, it will then drip down in the pan and be directed outside, that's why AC's always dribble water on the outside.

If you shut the unit off there will be a lot of moisture, all over the coils and in the pan. That moisture be food for mold in the right climates..

To avoid this, run it on the fan mode before turning it off, this will dry the unit out and avoid the mold issues
You do lose efficiency doing that. Most, if not all, are designed to hold a certain level/amount of water. They do this intentionally so the outdoor fan will "spray" the water on the outdoor coils, which helps with efficiency by cooling them down.
YMMV, I just spray it all down with coil cleaner, blower wheel and all, spray it with a brand new clean water pump up sprayer after 10 minutes and put a fan on it to dry everything out thoroughly. I use mine in Florida continuously. Way easier than disassembling everything. I maintain 4 of them doing this exact technique. I should do a youtube video of me doing mine, but I am sure it could potentially break the unit one day. So far, 12-15 cleanings later, their all going strong, and clean too.
BTW: This air conditioner 12k uses nearly the same amount of energy as the 8k and idles down to 95W or so when cooling minimally. The 8K Idled back about the same cooling minimally. The main difference is that the 12K can ramp up to using 780W or so while the 8K maxed out at like 460W.

Does anyone know if the 8000 btu ones ever go on sale as well?

Yes I believe they were last year for about $50 less. $229 I think it was.

Read some reviews. People still complain of mold and it's not the easiest to disassemble. Real pain to clean the blower wheel as it's like 2ft long.https://youtu.be/esPGXI-nVjI?si=LiFYHgfSkE__Ix-4
If you drill a couple of small weep holes in the back bottom of the case the water will drain out better and you won't have as bad of a mold issue.

Have the 8k for years and it's been good. Installation in the first year was challenging.

Tip: if your sill plate has a decent slant, cut a 2x4 window width and put in on the sill and then go thru regular install directions. Also, cut pool noodles make for good extra insulation.

I'm waiting for the midea 12k heat pump window ac that has a heater. Costco had it a few years ago but it never came back. We only have horizontal siding windows.

I can attribute to the mold issue. Mine lasted two seasons, but I didn't realize I'd have to maintain it other than cleaning the filter, etc. I just bought the newer 8k model with Matter connectivity since I believe the 12k was oversized for my bedroom (got it on sale 2 years ago at Costco). Once I get the 12k swapped out with the 8k, I'm going to try and disassemble the 12k, clean it, and move it to the garage for use.

Oversize doesn't do much on inverter ac, just run it on a lower fan speed so it will dehumidify more

The 12k BTU's peak is listed as 1140w. Where is the 780w figure from?

I don't think they make the model with the heat pump anymore but I could be wrong. I have one that I bought a few years ago. I like it, it works very well.

Nice! Does it ever hit wattages higher than that, even when maxed or at startup?

Bought a couple years ago. It's a great AC, super quiet…. But yeah, VERY hard to clean the fan. It gets really dirty in there and yet they made it almost impossible to access it. My fan got so clogged up, airflow was barely getting thru. Would be a perfect AC if they'd only make it easier to clean that fan.

This will be 4th season, and I simply maintain clean filter and been fine. What environment are you using it in that the blower fan is becoming that dirty so much so it reduces airflow?
Excess humidity (indoor and out) can do it alone, but so can things like turning it off right after cooling aggressively and just leaving it (which often traps more moisture inside than is ideal, especially on the coils). Setting a really low manual fan speed can often cause extra moisture to build up.

They can be made to, since they basically just sit on their sill-based stand, but you'll have to make a good-fitting fill panel to take up the open space.

They can vary quite a lot in real-world use depending how hot it is outside, if it's not too terribly hot they might only use 450-600W on 'max' cooling. That's where I typically saw mine operate. Sometimes up in the 1000W range on a hot 95-100f+ day.

The best, most efficient and quietest air conditioner on the market. Heavy sumbitch, too (64#), and setting up the bracket an hour's work first time. I have three, now to be their third year. Great price, unchanged. Our Costco had plenty. Sale lasted for weeks.

Have this one, not sure if mine is faulty, but flies gets in through the AC and into my house, took a month to figure out why there are so many flies. Did this happen to anyone?

Gaps are also sealed, literally can see the flies from outside coming out of the AC.

I think you got a bad unit
