No comment on these specific units but if you're having problems with mold on any AC, you should just turn it to fan mode for 20m or so before shutting off.

All AC's work by transferring heat from one side of the unit to the other side, as part of this process the coils on the inside of the room will be ice cold (so they can absorb the heat in the room and move it to the outside) moisture will condense on the cold coils, it will then drip down in the pan and be directed outside, that's why AC's always dribble water on the outside.

If you shut the unit off there will be a lot of moisture, all over the coils and in the pan. That moisture be food for mold in the right climates..

To avoid this, run it on the fan mode before turning it off, this will dry the unit out and avoid the mold issues

You do lose efficiency doing that. Most, if not all, are designed to hold a certain level/amount of water. They do this intentionally so the outdoor fan will "spray" the water on the outdoor coils, which helps with efficiency by cooling them down.

The way to avoid mold is never turn it off without running the fan a while AND never use the default energy save mode... because that turns off the fan *every time* they compressor turns off at the same time, leaving all the moisture everywhere. Leave it on auto or a specific fan speed and turn off emergy save mode always whenever use the AC. Because when it sits right after the compressor turns off, that's when all the moisture accumulates everywhere. Energy save node = grow mold inside AC.

Yeah, this is a good deal. I have both the 12 K and the 8K. The quietest and the most efficient units on the market. I wish it had the heating function as well, would've paid more. Also to keep in mind, I don't think it has fresh air function so you need to open your windows once in a while.

I have 3 of the 8k ones and I love them. Never had issues with mold. I do wish I could get them with heat pumps though.

Does this work on horizontal windows?

If your window is big enough and if u don't mind using a plywood or plexiglass to fill the gap, then the answer is yes. I have a horizontal window, I use wood on the bottom to act as the window down with plexiglass and tape

Had this AC for 2 seasons. $279 is a good deal for 12k BTU.

If you drill a couple of small weep holes in the back bottom of the case the water will drain out better and you won't have as bad of a mold issue.
Have two of these, but not bought at the same time, after two full seasons I disassembled the oldest one and cleaned it completely. Yes It is a bunch of screws, yes some are not the same size and require you to notate where they go back in. That being said, it didn't take forever, was done on the kitchen table basically with clorox wipes, some qtips and paper towels. The benefits in energy consumption and noise far outweigh the need for cleaning over a several year period, at this price would buy a third but im not a costco member. I also found a site that sources the internals, and purchased backup fans and a few of the plastic bits that I felt wouldn't last. So now I can disassemble, re assemble with a clean fan, and clean the dirty one at my leisure and let dry and such without a loss in use. Definitely reccomend in general, and consider it not even a question at this price, just my two cents however, apologies for the novel.

Read some reviews. People still complain of mold and it's not the easiest to disassemble. Real pain to clean the blower wheel as it's like 2ft long.

I bought a cheap used one and didn't realize this was an issue. It is a pain to get it apart. But once you know how to do it, you can have the front taken apart in like 10 min.

The fan wheel is almost impossible to clean between the fins / grooves. However, I sat and clean the fins one by one with a q-tip while sitting and watching TV.

One tips is to make sure you tilt this back when installing so it drains the water. Some other tip is drill extra holes in the back housing to help drain or add some rags to divert water out of the unit. That will prevent mold.

For this price on this unit, it's a steal. Costco currently carries it and it's $379 before sale.

Rather than drill holes, I take a paper towel and fold it into a 2" x 6" strip, then tuck one of the narrow ends of the towel between the frame and the fins so it touches the accumulating water. The water just wicks right out and drips out of the other end of the towel. I usually put a plant underneath it so it gets continually drip irrigated.

Nice! Does it ever hit wattages higher than that, even when maxed or at startup?
I've got a 12k BTU Midea unit, and the last time I used it a few weeks ago, it peaked at 735W.

I've got an 8K and a 12K, and I haven't had the mold problem either. South Texas here. Humid, but not Florida humid

My state has an energy efficiency rebate for products like this. It's a $100 rebate, but only works on the 8k or 10k versions, unfortunately. Check to see if you state has any rebates to make it a sweeter deal.

we got one shipped by costco.com last year. it had a blue rubber plug that was supposed to be removed "between seasons" but we just removed it and ran it all year without the plug. so, no drilling necessary.

Have had two the 12k and the 8k

My 12k was damaged in shipping but still worked so used it for 3 years no issues with functioning but the noise was not as silent as it was supposed to be.

Got the 8k when on sale and now it's silent and 100%

I run mine pretty much all day to keep my home office cool and dehumidified.

Never had a mold problem.

Keeps my sever rack running cool, keep me from sweating when on my computer.

Also keeps the humidity perfect so I can use my office as a dry box for my photography equipment.

I would not be happy with a regular window unit. I really appreciate the fact the window is nearly closed and so are the blinds and it's very secure.

I just recently started adding solar to my office and this was also a perfect way to feed my wire into the room without holes in the wall.

I can very highly recommend.

We have horizontal windows - can I install these on it sides and it would still work efficiently? Or is that a No-No (have not see any option for horizontal windows - and portable ACs are not as efficient).

Get portable ac and use plywood with cutouts for vents
