Haven't seen a 5.1 80 watt per channel AVR from a reputable brand for $200 since 2017, when I got my Yamaha RXV-377 for that price.

However, I would still like to upgrade my old AV receiver which is a Denon AVR-1612 5.1 1080p from 2011 which only has HDMI 1.4a support. I also have a Yamaha RX-V679 7.2 (2014) which I actually bought for $6.98 at Goodwill last year and spent $10 on Amazon for a remote. I bought this specifically for use in the garage for my Christmas light show so I can remotely control the song volume using the app on my phone while standing outside with visitors. The Yamaha has HDMI 2.0a (4K/60) audio/video switching: 6 in, 1 out and HDCP 2.2. My TV is a TCL 85" QLED 85Q750G recently on sale which is 4K/120 so I'm assuming running my 4K player through the Yamaha will not give me 4K/120.
I'm sure any receiver today will be far superior to the 1612, but I'm not an audiophile and don't upgrade to the latest and greatest every 2-3 years. A good to great experience is what I'm after. My income doesn't let me reach superior/outstanding! So whatever I get, I just want it to fit my needs, my equipment, and my viewing style... and not break the bank. I was budgeting $400-$600, so this Onkyo on sale falls well below my range which is nice.
I can easily just plug the 4K player into the new TV and use an optical cable back to the Denon (which doesn't have ARC/eARC being it's 2011) and continue with just Dolby 5.1. I don't stream so that's not a problem. I have a 4K Panasonic UBP-820 and a computer I plug into HDMI to the TV. No game systems or other devices. Do I really need to run all my components through an AV receiver? In my mind, using 2 HDMI cables (one in to the receiver and one out to the TV would be better for audio through the receiver, but could disrupt/change/distort the Blu-ray/4K output (especially for HDR/Dolby Vision)... or am I overthinking how things work? Basically I wouldn't need HDMI 2.1a and HDCP 2.3 if I only run the audio to the receiver. The UBP-820 has an HDMI out for Video/Audio, and one for Audio only so I don't think I necessarily need HDMI 2.1a and ARC.
If I wanted 7.1 and 4K/60 support through the receiver (which has ARC) now, I could move the Yamaha into the house and swap out the Denon. I'm looking for a reason to upgrade to bring my entire entertainment system into the 2020+ era. Should I buy this Onkyo TX-SR3100 or just wait for a good sale on a newer 7.1.2/9.1.4 than my Yamaha. Hearing some nice DTS/Atmos from the 4K's would be a plus at some point. Should I move the Yamaha in for 7.1 and not get the Onkyo?

Sound is good. Used the mic to setup, though not sure how much lacking it might be from Dirac or Audyssey - there aren't many options. Looks nice, though I wish it would display the sound type (PCM/dolby/whatever) it's receiving.
The few quirks that have me wondering about sending it back:
- Bluetooth won't turn it on. So starting spotify on my phone won't turn it on, I have to locate the remote or walk across the room first.
- Bass seems weird for stereo vs other. If hooked up to my PC and playing normal music, the bass is very low (via hdmi). If playing Netflix or other movie content from the TV (pushing a multi-speaker protocol) then the bass is quite high. I haven't found a solution for this yet other than manually adjusting the bass depending on my audio source, which is not user friendly. I need to test a bit more, but so far it hasn't been ideal.
Now that I've seen bad bluetooth implementation, I'm a little worried to try another model or brand and get similar results. I know some models have streaming built-in, but those companies like to randomly kill compatibility and are hard to trust long term.
