PSA: Looks like total wireless changed the policy from 60 days after activation to 60 days of active service. This went in to effect April 1st 2025.

Good phone and good deal.

The a35 is good, and is likely the last of the "good" Samsung a-series phones with an SD slot. The a36 and a56 don't have them.

I got the previous (nearly identical) a54 deal and was very happy with it. The two phones are architecturally almost identical (same processors and ram). It's not a speed demon, but is fast enough to do all "normal" stuff, like social media, email, phone, etc... without any real performance problems. Maybe a gamer would be disappointed with it, and it will be getting OneUI 7 very, very soon.

Wow.

Porting in a number is a hassle -- if you don't already have a phone number.

The whole ID verification is just...how do the kids say it nowadays...."totes wack".

No idea how they're storing your image and credentials -- or who has access to them -- or what the process is for them to expunge that data -- or who is ensuring they're following best practices.

Oh who am I kidding, your DL and image are being sold to the highest bidder. We all know that.

Yes that's seems true. I tried recently on an existing account and even though the page said free phone, after I added the phone to my cart, it showed full price.
Thanks for the info. So no more free(+$30 or two-month fee for unlcok) 2nd phone any more.

That is exactly what my point to the customer service representative, but no luck. My phone was activated sometime in February 2025. Total/ Verizon is enforcing this updated policy retroactively. I ended submitting a complaint to FCC.
The agents from Straight Talk, Total Wireless, and TracFone all said that devices activated before April 1st should follow the old unlocking policy.

I just found that I couldn't buy this Galaxy A35 for free but full price, when I am an existing customer with one line and want to add the second line with port-in, is this a new after the unlock policy change, or did I miss something? I heard many people bought the second phone for free with one month service(now two month to unlock) but now it looked to me the free phone only applies to new customer... Thanks!

I was able to buy it yesterday on the ID verify promo- you have to get the $55 or $65 plan with it.

Thanks for the info. When I tried it today, the 2nd phone is no longer free but $249, with the $30 fee for the 2nd line, so total $279 to check out...

Although I activated my phone yesterday, after April 1st, but I am glad for those people who activated their phone before April 1, after fighting with the providers.

And I kept wondering why when you type unlock it replies with just link vs unlock date. I had few phones activated after April 1st and all said same thing. Have few that are coming up from February in few days will report. I guess now the QVC HSN ones are going to be all the rage with yearly plan and "new user" discount lol. And make sure to use refferals for all new accounts to get discount on 2nd months on regular deals.

Agree. In the past I've always used original sim & activated other TF brands out of the box as a TF - but since they started requiring purchase of plan with phone it doesn't seem worth it because you lose the plan (not transferable) & need to buy new plan.

But with the new 60 day unlocking, isn't it always better to rebrand to TF and pay for the $25 90 day plan even if you have to sacrifice the included plan that came with the phone? Bc nowhere else can you get the second month for less than $25 so you're better off rebranding and paying the $25 for 90 days on TF to guarantee unlocking.

Up to the user to decide. BTW lots of reps will say rebrand can't be done because they don't know how, might take a few calls to get it rebranded.

The risk is "rebranding". How to make a phone purchased from TW or ST, to be rebranded to TF, and guarantee unlocking? If there is a trick, please share. Thanks.
For me, activated the phone after April 1st, at this point I mostly will pay the 2nd month to guarantee unlocking, unless I find another solid solution to avoid paying the 2nd month.

is a54 better than a35?

No.

They have the same graphics, processor and RAM.

But, the a35 has a slightly larger screen, is newer, and will receive android updates longer. It also fixes a minor overheating issue, that I've never experienced.

Activation date: February 25
Unlock date: April 26

I logged into my Total Wireless account today and it looks like they are reactivating my account for $55 by May 10, 2025

If it doesn't unlock on April 26, I'll try putting in a visible SIM card and see if it works

If it doesn't work even with a visible SIM card, I'll have to consider paying to reactivate it.

I did the ID verification when I ordered my first phone, so I doubt they will ask me to do it again. Anyway, when I tried to order the 2nd phone, it showed the full price of the phone for my account before it would ask me to do the ID verification(I went through to the final step before checkout, seeing no ID verification).

********
Never mind, I found the trick to get the 2nd free phone with $30 plan!
When I was asked "Already a Total Wireless customer?", I should NOT enter the phone number for my first line, but go ahead to pick the phone just like I ordered the 1st phone. It looked to me a bug. BTW, it didn't ask me to do the ID verification for the second time.

I have an A35 on route from TW due to arrive tomorrow. I just put one iPhone 13 in my cart that are free with 3 months of service and another free a35 in my cart. total shows $220 that's $165 for the free iPhone with 3 months of service and $55 for one month of service on another free A35 on website while signed into my TW account. I was able to go all the way to the screen where I put my credit card info in and agreed to terms. Sounds like I got farther than you in the checkout process with free device promotion working. I noticed these promotions say only two devices per account and the two phones in my cart would be a total of three devices in my account. I'm not sure I want to order any more devices though, I was hoping to receive discount service cost from additional lines but it doesn't appear that any of these device promotions give additional line service discounts. someone claimed I should be able to call Total Wireless after I activate secondary lines and get service reduced to $30 from $55 but I'm doubtful. obviously with these iPhone promotions that's not possible because you pay for 3 months of service in advance
