PSA: Looks like total wireless changed the policy from 60 days after activation to 60 days of active service. This went in to effect April 1st 2025.

Good phone and good deal.

The a35 is good, and is likely the last of the "good" Samsung a-series phones with an SD slot. The a36 and a56 don't have them.

I got the previous (nearly identical) a54 deal and was very happy with it. The two phones are architecturally almost identical (same processors and ram). It's not a speed demon, but is fast enough to do all "normal" stuff, like social media, email, phone, etc... without any real performance problems. Maybe a gamer would be disappointed with it, and it will be getting OneUI 7 very, very soon.

Wow.

Porting in a number is a hassle -- if you don't already have a phone number.

The whole ID verification is just...how do the kids say it nowadays...."totes wack".

No idea how they're storing your image and credentials -- or who has access to them -- or what the process is for them to expunge that data -- or who is ensuring they're following best practices.

Oh who am I kidding, your DL and image are being sold to the highest bidder. We all know that.

If TW make the $10 plan available to everyone via self-service then it'd be less headaches.

I guess they are enjoy dealing with. FCC complaints. I'm sure every FCC case resolution costs them more than $10.

Don't spread bs here . They can't move from 60 days to 180 without FCC approval otherwise most would enforce unlock policy anywhere from 12 month to never by now..
I remember reading that Verizon's excuse to implement a 60 days locking period was to reduce and prevent fraudulent activities. Shouldn't they have gotten approval from the FCC before able to change their unlocking policy from 60 days post activation to 60 days of paid service? Or the FCC is now complicit and siding with big corporations regardless?

Back then Verizon was the only major carrier who sold unlocked phones so thief's targeted their stores way more often than any others. It wasn't done against their customers but to reduce nationwide Verizon store burglaries .., usually after business hours, late nights/ early mornings

So as per the new unlock policy, we need to have two months of paid service. I heard we can pay $10 from Tracfone for the second month? How and where do we get that deal? And can we activate it without the phone? I need to send the phone as a gift but want to know if I can get and pay for the $10 Tracfone plan without having the phone physically?

I called customer care and asked them to change my plan to $10. They changed both phone plans to $10 plus tax

Looks like TW adds the A36 free deal just like the A35. Can someone confirm that please?

I'll wait a couple more days, but so far, rebooting and trying a different SIM haven't worked.

Does anyone know if buying a $30 refill for the 15GB Data Plan (the cheapest option?) would satisfy the new "60 days of paid active service" policy, instead of having to buy one of their phone plans for $40 or $55?
I used this $25 plan and it worked, but a bit of a warning. Don't buy it until your time is almost up.

It won't add to your current plan - it will replace it, and any time left on the old plan will be lost.

I think once you added, it'll be on "standby", when your previous service expires it'll then replace it

No, it won't. Other plans yes, but not the Walmart card. Don't make that mistake.

I did and it took a whole lotta time with support and a BBB report to fix it.

That sounds a good idea, but here's my case:
I received and activated the phone on 04/09(late evening, say 10pm), and my current plan shows "Renew your plan by 05/09". When should I top up with this $25 TW plan from Walmart? Can I do it on 05/10? or 05/09 after 10pm? I worry about I end up with 59-day paid service instead of 60-day for unlocking, if I top up sooner; or if I do it on 05/10, I may risk losing the number and impacting unlocking as well. This is a really tricky situation to be dealt with to ensure the 60-day requirement. What exactly did you do to guarantee unlocking?
Thanks!

Based on recent data points, it seems you can have a lapse in service and still get unlocked in 60 days as long as the line shows 2 plan payments within that 60 day window. So you should be safe to buy after your first month expires but before 60 days is up.

I had to buy two of them and ended up with close to 90 days, unfortunately. As for precise timing, I don't know if it is possible to time it right with only one.

So if my service ended on March 23, (activated Feb. 22) do I have till May 23 to buy another 30 days of service so it will unlock. Thanks
