Thanks for all the ideas!!

Flugette, I SO needed to hear that as I want to tend to want to price things too low (I don't wanna look greedy, etc.) But you are SO right....all the time it takes is worth something. Your $20+ 'rule' for haggling made me think that maybe offering a $/$$ purchase or something like that might be a fun way to get people to buy more. We all like those, rightWink

tn_native, LOVED the freebie idea too, and your sign ideas made me laugh out loud I know the hagglers will come - I think I will have some signs waiting just in case.......but I have the blunt honesty of Chloe O'Brian (TV show 24 - anybody watch/ed this??....sadly it ended this seasonSadwalk) so I don't think I'll have any problems letting them know that we won't be hagglingTeehee

twistrman, I think I might just incorporate your idea with letting my dd sell something...maybe we'll do the pop, that would be simple. Anything else might be too complicated I'm afraidFacepalm That and we live fairly close to the center of town and I purposely picked the day the farmer's market was going so lots of ppl would be driving by....they'll have tons of food/vendors up there that day and I think a lot of folks will be going to or coming from that so that might not work real well this year. Thanks for the great idea though!

Maybe small snacks - like chips and granola bars. Something to tide people over (and get them thirsty...) Big Grin Definitely do some pop and water!

Well... I'm off to bed. I did really well today with managing to not get too much heartburn - until now. GRRR... crept up on me. I think I ate too much at dinner, then DH dragging out the pretzel M&M's didn't help. He said they are like crack... Now I have to wonder how he knows what crack is like. Roll

Hope you don't mind me bustin' on in here. Smilie

Advertise like no tomorrow. Craigslist until you are sure you are going to be flagged. Post in the garage sales area, baby, household, furniture, general.. all over.

Don't type out everything you have and/or price lists. Ignore emails that ask specifically for that. Nothing irritates me more than people that want to know the exact count, the exact size, etc. I just tell them it would be impossible for me to do that but they are more than welcome to come out.

You don't have to stay open all day long to rake in the money. My friend only opens from 8-12 saturday and pulls in just as much (if not more) than I can in an entire day in the exhausting heat. She lives one street over from me so I know it isn't a difference in area.

Like someone else said, organize. Invest in a cheap pricing gun on ebay if you plan to really stock up and sell. It will pay for itself 10x over. Don't order from the jackass in NY though because I did and didn't get my pricing gun for WEEKS. Mad A typical month of sales at my house, 2x a month, for roughly 4 hours on a saturday pulls in quite a bit of money.

Don't sell yourself short. Your time, your time away from your family, your money, your thinking and logic, your gas, car maintenance, etc. All of that has to be figured in. Even if the items you sell were a moneymaker, you still paid in some way or another. For instance, the aveeno that was mistakingly TPC for 1.25 I got for pennies on the dollar with coupons. I price it at 2.50. All that people know is that in the store, they would pay more than double that amount.

Watch your hot items and plan to restock on those as quickly as possible. My garage is for nothing but my stockpile and I have about 10 shelves lining the walls. (bought them at Target, plastic and sturdy) I offer people the chance of coming back and privately shopping if they are busy on saturday, it's too hot..etc. Those people are awesome because 1. they become regular 2. they spend good money 3. they bring family & friends. Open your door to them and they will open their wallet to you.

Have fun! I love money. Big Grin

True, true... It's just one of those weird/touchy things for some folks. I have no clue about legality issues, all I know is that in my early days of couponing I called (that was before I knew the whole "no calling" rule... *laugh*) the recycling center and asked about going through the dumpsters and the dude pretty much scared me to pieces.
To make an analogy to regular couponing, if you called your local Target and asked if you could use an MFQ on the same item as a TQ, and the T worker claimed that would be "coupon fraud!", should you just assume the T worker is correct? Wink

IMHO, part of the reason for the whole "no call" rule is that you'll often get some uneducated cashier who pulls some crap out of his/her ass rather than actually give you correct information. The same could very well be true here.

Probably both.

Just to be clear, the principle of "abandoned property" referred to above does *not* apply to any trash can, dumpster or any other such container that is locked, fenced off or otherwise purposefully made inaccessible. The reasoning is that, in those cases, extraordinary care has been exercised to prevent third-parties from accessing that abandoned property and to maintain an increased level of privacy surrounding that property.

But if the previous owners of the abandoned property don't bother taking such extraordinary care to ensure the privacy of their trash, then it's up for grabs for anyone who wants to claim it.

Quote :
But... then there are some that aren't quite as formidable - like the ones in a few parking lots. Maybe I'll try my hand at dumpster diving after all. Well, maybe once the baby is born. Could you imagine if I got stuck or hung up half in and out of a dumpster and ready to burst?? laugh out loud
I don't mess w/too many actual *dumpsters*. I certainly would if I found something good enough in one, though. laugh out loud For the most part, I stick w/PO trash cans, our neighbors' recycling containers, and the occasional grocery store garbage can.
Quote from flugette :
I have a question. Not sure if you know or not, but if recycling dumpsters are set up as a fundraising effort (for a high school in this instance), is it considered stealing from them to take the inserts? I always bring my newspapers there, so I am contributing, not just taking, I just don't want to get in trouble if someone should try and question me. There are about 7 dumpsters set up, none of them locked, and as far as I know, there's no security cameras. And there are no signs prohibiting dumpster diving or anything, so I am assuming its ok. Its just the aspect of the fundraiser thing that stumps me.
Arguably, that's not "abandoned property," as ownership of the property has merely been transferred (from the previous owner to the group raising the money). In other words, that property, unlike that found in a trash/recycling container, still has a valid "owner" who could legitimately be upset at your interference w/that property.

But like you said, the damages for that owner aren't the value of the inserts, but merely the value of the weight of the paper. Toss them $1 to cover their "losses" and clear your conscience, and I doubt you'd ever be hassled about it.

Smeg -

You are right... I shouldn't just assume someone knows what they are talking about!

We don't really have many folks who do recycling containers around here. They either take it to the recycling center or one of the recycling dumpsters - but I may need to start keeping my eyes open and see if I'm just not overlooking some opportunities. The dumpsters in the parking lots are typically set up for certain items - i.e. there's one designated as "newspapers only", etc...

This has been an informative discussion. I'm learning some interesting things. Smilie

On another note... I'm thinking I should've bought a car seat yesterday. I forgot to take the car seat out of DH's car before he left for work!! GRRR....

Oh, and if anyone wants some coffee... I've got a pot on.

Some tips:

- Don't sell yourself short. Just because you spent pennies (or less!) on it doesn't mean you have to mark it for .50. Your time and effort make your items valuable, so price them accordingly. The prices in the GS thread are a great starting point.

- Don't haggle with people, unless they're buying a significant amount from you (for me, its $20+). If you've priced well, then they are getting a deal anyway.

- Make sure its set up neatly. This goes a long way in establishing credibility. Keep like items together, keep them orderly throughout the sale.

Those are just a few tips that have worked well for me. Mainly, have fun doing it, and earning the money!! Big Grin

1st) It took me a while to understand this - and YS shoppers around here will do all they can to 'steal' from you.
2nd) I thought the shiny paper coupon inserts and sale flyer were not recycleable, so arnt you just helping clean out the trash?

This is the same way it is here, but when I found out they were getting less than 10 cents for 50 lbs (literally), I didn't worry about it. If they stop me, I'll hand them 50 cents for what little I took (knowing that I left them over 100 lbs of papers to start with).
 I am so going to vistaprint right now and making this into a banner to hang on my table...I get "Well the lady down by McDs sells hers for $1" all the time, and I'm like good for that lady you can either pay me $2.50 or go down by McDs

Yep. This was a huge hit for him and for the customers. He has a split sand/water table. So I filled 1/2 with ice and Sobe and 1/2 with snacks. He sold a ton of stuff, kept him busy and out of my hair and the customers thought he was a riot. I'll see if I can find a pic of him and his sale items later.

I get the "did you used to own a store" all the time. Most annoying question. Then they want to know the real reason I have all of it. I say simply "coupons." Most of the time they either stand there looking shocked or say "wow, you must be good. I wish I knew how to do that."

They do, they just don't have the motivation to learn and I'm not going to teach.

I've used the $4 TQ wyb PullIups and ANY game or toy, and it beeped on everything game and toy I have tried. K1 though. I didn't realize until after I used it that the $5 Kellogg's/Keebler TQ is only for Hasbro games. The cashier did K1 it. I haven't tried Hasbro games for that TQ. The Candyland one is $6.99 I think so that's a fair deal. I saw the $5 action shooter game MQ that someone had mentioned before, I seem to remember that the game is about $10.
