Yep. This was a huge hit for him and for the customers. He has a split sand/water table. So I filled 1/2 with ice and Sobe and 1/2 with snacks. He sold a ton of stuff, kept him busy and out of my hair and the customers thought he was a riot. I'll see if I can find a pic of him and his sale items later.

No, but where did this Q come from? Is it an IP or insert? I would be very curious about how well it worked. Wink I know there are some toys on sale for $5 this week.
It was in our inserts. Guess it was regional?

Quote from setsail :
I've used the $4 TQ wyb PullIups and ANY game or toy, and it beeped on everything game and toy I have tried. K1 though. I didn't realize until after I used it that the $5 Kellogg's/Keebler TQ is only for Hasbro games. The cashier did K1 it. I haven't tried Hasbro games for that TQ. The Candyland one is $6.99 I think so that's a fair deal. I saw the $5 action shooter game MQ that someone had mentioned before, I seem to remember that the game is about $10. The peelies were TAPED to the boxes. laugh out loud
OK, good to know. I'll still use the ones I have, just make sure I remember the Pull-Ups. Wink That's one thing I always forget to buy - I keep stocked on diapers, but always run out of Pull-Ups. Can't wait until my oldest two stay dry through the night. My 3yo daughter will stay dry several nights in a row, and then be wet the next several nights. Told hubby I'm waiting for a full month of staying dry before I put her in underwear at night. I have enough laundry to do without throwing wet sheets/blankets/animals into the mix!!

I had my first GS in 2 years last weekend during a neighborhood wide sale. All my stuff is stored on shelving in our unfinished basement. It was so hot and I was to have no help carting it all up. So in the end I made up "This way to Cool SAVINGS" signs with arrows and directed everyone to a outer entrance to my basement.

Then for pricing I used "Menu" style pricing posters put up around the basement for people to read, rather than pricing each item.

My very first customer was an elderly lady looking for costume jewelry. She almost left when she found I had none but ended up spending $60. Lesson learned though was she would grab around $6 or $12 worth of stuff then ask if I would take $5 or $10. Every time she did it in such a way I got the impression that was the last of what she was going to buy and I'd say yes. I think she ended up talking me down over $15 in the end. Really annoyed me but taught me to tell others that I was not willing to come down in price until they had picked all they were going to buy. Then depending on the total I might round down a cpl dollars.

Up sides to basement sale.
- It was ridiculous hot so people who came tended to stay a bit if only to cool down and in the end I don't think one left without buying something.
- My "check-out" was right next to exit so it was hard for anyone to shoplift
- No need to cart it all up and back down
- We had a small rain shower come through near noon and I didn't have to scramble.
- The few times I had a break between waves I'd quickly toss the larger bills in the deep freeze to minimize any chance of it being stolen.

Downsides:
- I didn't have/take the time to properly rope off areas not for sale. Had blocked the areas with folding tables but people just walked around them and were trying to buy just about everything.
- People got to see inside of my basement (though in my case didnt' really care. Its unfinished and always locked from getting upstairs.
- I had a couple people ask to get in after the rain finished and my DH decided he didn't want me to re-open. I caved on one old couple letting them walk through my house to get to basement as I'd already locked up outside entrance. Don't feel they were a risk but still regret setting that precedence.
The other family had asked ahead of time as they were waiting on mother to come for visit and wanted to bring her. for them I reopened the basement door and walked them in that way when they came. Both after hours groups spent another $50+ each so I suppose it was worth it, though DH wasn't thrilled.
- Could have been a bit of a security issue I suppose but DH was around upstairs the whole time and we had locked the access to upstairs so I could only go up by knocking for him to open it.
- I chose to carry down most of my yard furniture so no one would be tempted to walk away with it but it was still easier than carrying up all my surplus.

In the end I made almost exactly 1K in 4 hours and very minimal set up effort. At the beginning I was afraid no one would want to follow the signs to my basement but in the end I was so pleased it almost made me wish I could do this once a month.

+++ Oh and for storage in my basement I have large metal industrial shelving and I found some free beer flats and other large boxes with open tops that fit very nicely on the shelves. I treat them kind of like storage drawers and then when I had the sale I just pulled out the ones from the shelves too high or low to comfortably view and set them on some folding tables placed around the basement. When it was done I only had to move the boxes back to the shelves and fold up the tables.

I really heart all you guys' ideas; lots of stuff I hadn't thought of...

Quote from ank220 :
Maybe small snacks - like chips and granola bars. Something to tide people over (and get them thirsty...) Big Grin Definitely do some pop and water!

Ooooo, good idea on the small snacks and stuff. That would be manageable for me and that's the kind of stuff that I always seem to have around that's free/cheap after q's and we're always trying to gobble down before exp. dates! Perfect.

Advertise like no tomorrow. Craigslist until you are sure you are going to be flagged. Post in the garage sales area, baby, household, furniture, general.. all over.

Don't type out everything you have and/or price lists....*snip*

You don't have to stay open all day long to rake in the money....*snip*

Like someone else said, organize. Invest in a cheap pricing gun on ebay if you plan to really stock up and sell....*snip*
Tons of good stuff in there, thanks! I would have not thought to post all of those places on CL, good idea!

I am planning just a Sat. sale from about 7:30/8ish to 12/1, I'm with you on this.

DD has a water table too, I think I will try this - she'll have a blast.

I still haven't had my sale and I REALLY REALLY need to or I WILL be on the next episode of Hoarders. I'm at the point where I want to do a sale and then donate what doesn't sell for tax write off and start fresh.
Teehee I have a pretty small house so it does not take long for us to get jam packed with stuff. I've got a ton of dd's baby clothes/stuff to sell too. That is the one thing about being a bargain shopper....I am definitely saving my most favorite stuff of hers for any future children but I just cannot keep it all. When you find stuff so cheap you end with a ton more to have to get rid of. The baby stuff should help attract ppl to the sale too; baby sales usually are really busy around here.

Ugh me too. DD has always been a heavy nighttime wetter that I can't imagine this would be anytime soon for us. And when I spend so little on groceries I would much rather just continue to buy something for nightttime/naps than do extra laundry all the time!

Question for the Target experts.

We were in our local Target and bought some patio furniture that went to 75% off. We need a few more chairs than the store had but some neighboring towns have the chairs, but only at 30% off. I called each store and they said they would not match price on the 75% of since each store did their own pricing etc.

Any way that I can get the chairs we need at 75% off? Purchase and then return/rebuy at my local store?? Embarrassment

I'm a bit curious myself. Was sorely tempted to try the same on the TomTom GPS units that were on clearance a few weeks ago. Was able to buy one for self at $75% but wanted a second for work. Never did try.

I have no idea abt price matching clearance items but return/rebuy a clearance item is a huge YMMV..I have always been told they need to put it on the floor first and then you can rebuy it....

You could maybe try taking someone with you and after you have returned, the second person goes up to buy that item....Wink

I have alot more storage in my house than I did in my apt, but I think I could fill a warehouse if I allowed myself to do so LMAO

DD and I will be hitting up some sales here soon, once she finds out the sex of the baby. She was told at her appt yesterday that if the nausea/vomiting/weight loss hasn't gotten better by next visit, expect to be put in the hospital. Keeping my fingers crossed that she starts gaining some weight soon and starts keeping more foods down. She's lost 12 lbs in 4 months.

Thanks for the 411 on the TQ. When does that Q expire? If we got a Pull Up GC deal between now and when it expires you might be able to work out a decent scenerio.

Thanks. We didn't get it. Sadwalk Big surprise.

So I'm trying to figure out something for dinner tonight that I can fix without turning on the stove. So hot here, 94 degrees with heat index over 100, last I heard. Yuck.
