No local dimming.
It helps display deeper black color in the dark area by dimming backlit leds individually. minimizing washed out black color effect. More dimming zone the better. Full array < miniLED < Oled(pixel lit).

I think this tv has decent contrast for the price though. I recommend taking a look at Rtings reviews if you are in the market for tv.
Why didn't you just plug in a Roku?

Got a 2020 x90 under a warranty claim now (black screen with no picture, only sound). Thankfully they extended the warranty of my model to 5 years.

It's been a fantastic tv so far until this. I know I'm just one example. But I'd be wise to save all your receipts/invoice and register the tv with Sony incase it happens to you.

Actually don't mind the Google OS on mine. Still pretty snappy. But like I said mine was a x90 so don't know if it had a higher chipset

Don't like plug in. It runs hot and have to plug in a power to that thing.

What rating should it be to be considered more good than bad?

I bought this TV for my mom last year using a Walmart deal to price match Best Buy where I had coupons. But it was I think $100 more than this. I believe this model is discontinued at most retailers, for some reason Walmart appears to have a TON of inventory.
The TV itself is good, no issues there at all. I had to buy third party TV legs because my parents TV stand wasn't wide enough for a 75 inch that has the legs on the ends like this, they sell legs that can fit into the VESA mount holes for that situation and despite its massive size those narrow legs work well to support the TV.
I basically only buy Sony TV's - this is a mid tier Sony model, the picture and quality of the build of the TV is good but it's not as good as their flagship X90L or other non-OLED high end models. You won't really care or notice that at home though. The OS works smoothly and there have been 0 wifi issues.

Anyone in the know have an issue with this on a covered/screened in patio?

Or, wait for a say a TCL QM7 deal that's a couple hundred more?

It's color coded, green on rting they consider good. Yellow is mediocre and red bad. This is a decent TV, probably great for the price.

I was also eyeing the QM7 and waiting for it to drop to/below 900 mark again, now I'm not sure if I should just pick this instead.

I have a X90K that I bought a couple of years ago and I have really liked it. This TV is not as advanced as the X90K but there was a comparison made and it seems this is still a good deal. If you can get an X90k for a similar price I would get that instead

Seems like a solid deal. Anyone have experience with this TV?
I have the x85j (2021 model). I like it overall. It doesn't have local dimming, but I still think it has pretty good contrast and I like that I don't have deal with blooming. It has great brightness (I turn mine down to about 50%), and can fight some glare, though I wouldn't use it in direct sunlight. Mini LED displays are better for very bright rooms, but I watch during the day without issue. Also just an fyi, this uses the x1 processor. It is not capable of handling 4k at 120hz properly. I game on it, but I'm a casual gamer and use quality mode on xbox and PS5, so I don't use 120hz anyway as the frame rates are locked at 60fps in these modes. If you are a serious gamer, I wouldn't recommend it since it doesn't properly handle 4k @120hz. For basic streaming and movie viewing where your couch is directly in front of the TV, I would recommend it.

Figured I'd give it a shot against my 2016 TCL TV. Might not be flagship, but I'm sure in 6 years, quality has increased. Thanks OP.

rtings says this has a poor viewing angle but their reviews seem to say that about most TVs unless you're in the $2000+ range. Can anyone who has this TV give any feedback? My couch is within 25 degrees so 80% of the seats will be fine. But is it just horrible if you're at 45 degrees?
