You dont have to do this necessarily as the verification code they send when you are purchasing the phone doesnt have to be the phone number you are porting. You can get the verification code on any number then when you port a number over you can use the number barn number for $5

Yes, but nobody sold you something for $125-200 under retailer wholesale cost.
You get what you pay for.
You can buy this phone for more without the requirements.
If they did not require this some folks would buy dozens to resell (which I have no exact issue with other than it make such a deal impossible to offer)
Decide for yourself.
It's really no different from walking into T-mobile and signing a contract to get a 'free' or subsidized iphone. They take your id there.

Tried activating new iPhone 13 with ask for new number option to see if I could avoid having to do the port but I got a screen saying bring your own number was required to activate device so I can confirm that trick isn't working anymore as some claimed it did

YMMV, but I activated after 22 days (from purchase to porting activation). After a couple weeks you get automatic emails reminding you to activate.

It's mentioned in every TW deal that GV port is slow & can take several weekdays. You have to be patient - TW support has no control over how quickly GV port completes.

Got number from number barn for $5.
In the "numbers" tab there should be something there in regards to porting out. Its been a few weeks but I think there is a port out info button there that you click on and it has the account number and pin.
After you have that info numberbarn will send an email or a message within their webpage that a request to port out has been made and to wait the amount stated. For me this took like 5 minutes to process.
