Definitely targeted, I'm only seeing 50K but it's offering me an upgrade. I see 80K when I open the link in a new private window.
Interesting: I see 80K in private window, and 175K regular.

I want to add a use case for the points:

I live in the east coast far away from a major airport hub. In summer 2024 I booked a roundtrip economy award flight to Japan from Charlotte NC for 55000 transferred amex points

My ticket price went from $1800 to $600.

If you like cash and don't care about points, this is not a great deal. Amex points are valuable for many things, but you only get 0.6¢ per point if you want cash. So, the 'cash only ' math:

175,000 x $0.006 = $1,050
Less:
- $695 annual fee
- Apx $112 opportunity cost for spending $8000 on a card, getting 0.6%cb when you would have gotten about 2%cb.

That's $243, similar to most sign up bonuses.

Plus, the cash back is a statement credit, not cash, so you may have to spend a little more on the card to spend down the credit.

I'm waiting for a boosted sign up bonus on the AMEX Schwab Platinum card. It gives 1.1¢ cash back per point, deposited directly into your Schwab account.
amex checking account cashout is 1c/pp, but also you can 'sell' to a broker for 1.4c/pp which is frowned upon but i've made a living doing it and i'm still in the ecosystem

They are but also becoming harder and harder to easily cash in for maximum value due to Airlines constantly devaluating their points. I'm actually on the verge of canceling my platinum and just use my 2.6% / 5% CB BoA cards

Yes you can still do it but takes a lot more legwork then it used to and what once was 100k business class tickets are becoming more 150/200k business class tickets plus fuel surcharges etc.

I used to use it for a lot of domestic AA tickets via BA but that rug got pulled too. Even if I did availability of award seats is almost non existent.
how to get 2.6% CB on BoA card?

I hate Amex gold coupon book with uber, grubhub and Dunkin', and can't imagine how to deal with the more complicated platinum one. Is checking account still viable to keep points alive after closing credit card?

Dayum...that annual fee doe. $700 annual fee, credit hit just to get $1000 back in points?

But sitll tempted. On a Rolex waitlist ($9k retail) and was told I would get it sometime this year so this might come in handy. Buy the rolex, get the $1k points and then pay off card in full in next billing statement and then close the account.......

If you want points for free hotel nights, that's how they come in useful for us. For nearly 20 years now, we've been able to stay at Hampton Inns or a Marriott for free when traveling. Even when visiting family - the visit is much nicer (to us, anyway) to stay at hotels than with family, and we wouldn't have done that without having free stays. With Hilton, if you pay for four nights entirely with points, you get the 5th night free, which has been nice, too.

They've devalued the points a lot over the years, and we've taken to using the Marriott more. Marriott has devalued their points, too, I'm not sure at this point which is better, but it's worked out that the places we've gone we've found more Marriott stays at lower points. BUT it comes in handy to have the Hilton, too, for when you're looking for a place to stop on the road and want options for who has the cheapest points night nearby. Though we still use it on our may stay as well.
are you saying you use this Amex platinum cards to transfer points for hilton and marriott stays?

which card gives 1.5% unlimited cash back and 5% on some categories? I have BoA customized cash rewards card and it gives 1% + 75% bonus = 1.75% vs. 2.6% you mentioned. It has 3% CB for some categories like online shopping, restaurant etc. (applies to only one category which needs to be selected)

Question on the $695 annual fee.....is this applied immediately after u open the card OR gets applied after the end of the year?

I'm planning on using this to get the 150k bonus points and then close the card immediately after..I figure in the next 6 months or so. Would I then waive the annual fee? If not for the annual fee, getting $1k back in points is excellent for a $8k purchase.

PS: Those only seeing 80k, get a vpn browser like Opera, use vpn and you'll see the 150k offer. It seems amex is targeting specific locations for higher points. I'm in CA btw.

It's two different cards. The cash rewards you mentioned and the Premium rewards which is 2.6% on everything and 3.5% on restauraunts / travel. Its points but you can cashout the points at a penny per point.
