There is a steel locking bar that automatically engages on the way up with 2 lock points (basically one low one for e.g. tire rotation when you just need the wheels off the ground and a higher one when you need more clearance). I've had my 7000 for about 7 years. It doesn't get a ton of use, but when I need it, it's awesome. I did buy the extensions though because the rails are a bit too short for our Sienna.

I'm torn between the two. Would like the extra capacity for larger vehicles but these have the same spread so larger vehicle would most likely need larger spread. May just stick with the 5000TL

You sir are a prince among men. It's been forever since these have been on sale and I desperately need one for an upcoming clutch job.

For the little price difference i would say to go 7000. Better to be at half capacity than to be at 70% for example safety wise and longevity of the hydraulics. I debated the 5000, but ended up buying the 7k and it doesn't struggle, but it also doesn't love picking up my 3k lb car.

You can use smaller ones turned sideways on longer vehicles as long as you don't overload either one.

5k showing up but the 7k has no price and gives an error if you try to add to cart.

Can you blame it?

Are these fine to keep outside, exposed to the elements? In a better life, I have a detached garage with a lift. Until then, if ever, I have an extend driveway pad that looks like the Exxon Valdez ran aground.

Walmart has another brand "SKYSHALO", $1100 everyday price. Good reviews too.

What keeps these things from snapping and crushing you? This design has always freaked me out a bit, but there must be some sort of locking safety mechanism?

The mechanism appears to be the same used in motorcycle and other lifts where there is a ratcheting lock bar that won't allow the lift to go lower than the most recent indent. I don't have the link but there is at least one YouTube video that shows what happens if you don't let it engage the safety locks and one side of the car fell down. I've wanted one of these but I'm on the fence if it would really be a time saver and/or worth the amount of precious garage space it will use. You definitely cannot beat this price though...
