Go to an Indian store and buy for a lesser price. Indian Ayurveda philosophy and science has, for thousands of years, been using turmeric and other such natural ingredients for a variety of health reasons. The Western world has been playing down this philosophy because it doesn't have evidence. Many Indian Ayurvedic researchers have now started to come up valuable insights proofs and evidence that such natural and pure components have healthier impact to human body. It's only recently that West has started to tap into such products of course for monetary reasons. You go to Costco and the turmeric containers are super expensive.

Is someone running an Indian restaurant posting this? Kind of a peculiar spice to have in such abundance. I feel like I only use turmeric to add color to dishes and doubt I could use this much before it went bad/lost potency. Does someone have a secret use for turmeric that they would need so much of it on hand?

It's supposed to be an antioxidant so people use it to add to their daily oatmeal, smoothies, tea etc.

I cook a lot of Indian food. This size is great. I'm going to compare it to the stuff I get from the Indian store we have. They do sell it in bags which come from India, so that will be interesting.

Non-Indian here. We happened upon an excess of turmeric a few years ago (bought some, didn't realize we had some, and a guest stayed over and bought some and left a nearly full container). Started mixing it into a lot of dishes to try to use it up. Adds a fantastic flavor to grilled or sauteed veggies. We're getting close to running out, so time to restock...

Cooking aside, Turmeric is also a fantastic, and safe, non-pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory.

Dont know how good THIS stuff is, but everybody probably needs some on a daily basis.

Now here come the trolls......

I'm not knocking turmeric, and I do cook with it, but there is very little evidence of its effects as an anti-inflammatory. If it were anything special for that purpose, surely the scientists at pharmaceutical companies would have picked up on that by now, whether in this form as some arcane patentable analog.
And you're clearly trolling with a final comment like that, but whatever. So, does it cure measles, too?

Source? Who tried to patent it, when, in what jurisdiction, and what court shot it down for what reason? Because there was no evidence that it acted as they claimed? They've become quite adept at making small molecular changes to evade patent restrictions, for drugs that actually work. Look at the popular antidepressant escitalopram(Lexapro). It's just a stereoisomer of the previously-parented drug citalopram (Celexa), for which the patent was expiring. It acts the same in the body and was only created so a new patent could be issued, and is far from the only example of superficial tinkering for legal purposes. If turmeric did much, someone would have figured out how to make a patentable form, but you can't get a patent for something that has no utility.
