They charged me the second month despite having the auto pay off. They got nasty on the phone so I filled out a FCC complaint. Money refunded the next day.
Don't count on any of the consumer protection agencies for too long. Time will tell.
That's good that there are still workers at the FCC to help out.

I guess I look at it the other way. Most comparable plans reset every month, so I am happy to have the opportunity to roll over my data and not pay for something that goes unused. Yes, it's a minor annoyance but as you noted it only takes 60 seconds. And of course, there is no requirement to manually renew, for other people reading this, you can always just let your plan auto renew each month.
I 100% agree with you. I suppose it's something I've taken for granted all these years!

At this point, I basically pay $7/month for an unlimited plan with the amount I've rolled over! 😁

Sounds about right for a $5/month phone service.

Is this plan only $5 a month after the three months?

In your opinion is this the best service to have for low use? I want a cheap active line for when friends visit from overseas. I currently have an xfinity line where the two year cheap rate has expired. Is this op plan only 7$ a month with rollover minutes? Any advice appreciated. Ty thumbs 👍
The cheapest plan is $5/mo but that does not include both minutes and data. With our Tello line, we kept it going by rolling data at $5 per month, then bumped up to $6 per month to add minutes when someone needed them. The other option is to buy the $20 paygo credit, then on day 89 start the $5 data plan and keep rolling that. Then data will come from the data bucket and minutes will come from the paygo balance. And it's about $7 per month for the first three, month 4 and 5 will be free with Tello Dollars, then $5 per month after that. Unfortunately, with either option you would have to pay for the SIM or eSIM unless you start with the deal in the OP.

While I can't say for certain it's the "absolute" lowest of any plan options or carrier, $7/month for 100 Talk + Unlimited Text + 2GB data that you rollover is cheap enough for me to not stress about looking for anything else.

Your case as a loaner phone might be different, so MtF4392's input might be the direction you want to go.

How much are taxes and fees? I know tello plans are not inclusive of tax.

It varies by billing address, but to give you an idea: we have one line that just renewed on the monthly $15 unlimited plan (from the last deal) and the total was $15.46. In the past, we never had tax/fees on a data only plan, but now it looks like it is 10 cents on the $5 plan.

Thank you. I was eyeing on US mobile. But I will give tello a try for the three months plan.

To roam internationally, you have to purchase a $20 pay as you go credit. The credit expires in 90 days unless you purchase a monthly plan to keep it active (but the monthly plans will not work internationally). You could potentially open an account with a referral, then on day 89 use your Tello Dollars to buy a $5 plan to keep your balance active. That would keep your $20 valid for an additional two months. More info about the roaming here: https://tello.com/international_roaming
Smarter thing to do is get a local sim, and use tello on wifi (local sim data) and downgrade to the $5/mo plan. In Asia, I can get a local sim for $8-10/mo with 250gb data.

Where in Asia can you get 250gb of data for 8-10$ ? Any specific company and country?

I'm told tello is good with roaming internationally unlike Redpocket? It will be pay as you go, but you can receive texts, make phone calls etc, I'm talking about countries outside of mexico and canada. Their 2GB plan is at 10 per month. Can someone who has used their international feature comment?

Yeah, not sure if you needed to make the calls from the tello app while international. It's been a while I checked on that - can combine use with Google voice on Wi-Fi, plus WhatsApp (widely used internationally by businesses). I have recently called internationally for free. Can use the app or website to check destinations that are free call to landline or cell ,and text.

I have been using tello for at least 5 years, in different States. Reliable and inexpensive.

Just remember to renew before it does automatically so you can rollover data and minutes. I tend to buy a bigger plan one month and minimal plans from then on until I need more data. Especially, when I tend to be near WiFi often.

It doesn't have crazy hidden fees. I know what you mean - other US cell companies say $30 unlimited and then it is close to $50! Tello uses the same pre-paid system most of the world uses.

Scary stuff that once you hand out CC, these companies can keep charging you whatever without your approval.

Also, my recommendations for international travel is to get a sim card with a data plan that fits your travel time. The tello system is similar to what many countries use for daily phone services, pre-paid sim card plans sometimes with extra free data for specific apps like WhatsApp or YouTube. If traveling across different countries in Europe, double check the company covers other countries you are visiting.

Not loving this next billing date being a month from today with the 3 month plan. I hope I'm not charged again in May.
