Is this a makita fan boy thing, or is there a specific model you believe is superior?

This tool is awesome. Great feel and build quality. Incredible torque and includes programmable features via the app.
I personally prefer the next model down as it has enough torque for most automotive applications and fits into tighter spaces. This one is a bit overkill for most as you wont need this level of power. At this price, Its a no brainer if you dont yet have a high torque impact.

These are awesome, we use them at work. If I weren't in the Milwaukee ecosystem for my home tools I'd be all over this. Bosch unfortunately doesn't have the breadth of tools to justify getting invested in their battery system.

Bosch has build quality and reliability. Milwaukee has the high end torque, which comes at a quality cost. See Dean Doherty on Youtube. Scotsman who repairs tools. He advocates for Milwaukee and Bosch and isn't a fan of Milwaukee for longevity.

Good bang for the buck! The Milwaukee and DeWalt impacts are significantly more powerful (over 50% more breakaway torque), but they're also more expensive and probably slightly lower quality. This will break away 95% of the bolts most people will ever touch.

the crazy thing is, I have had this tool unused in my garage for 2 years and need to use it, for whatever reason, I get a red light from the tool and no function. incredibly disappointing and now I need to do a warranty exchange. hoping the next one holds up because its a beautiful tool

Depends on the Eco system. If you just want this impact go for it. Stat wise the brushless ryobi beats it. The makita of course. Milwaukee stomps it

The only Milwaukee I see that has better specs is $300, and the only one I see with similar price has lower specs. Not sure I see the Ryobi model you mean.

Another ecosystem I don't have. My dream is to get them all to conform to a standard. ANY standard. You know, like they finally got Apple to do. Who's with me?
