I just returned two of these. I had high hopes but this machine is unstable.
Primarily, it will black screen crash at high loads with the GPU. SO exiting a game, the optimus switch to intel will trigger a bluescreen. I've used both B16 (latest bios) as well as B15. Multiple re-installs.
It would crash on shaders as well.

Last straw was booting into Batocera (linux). I figure my problems were windows related and an eventual bios/driver fix would solve them. But same problem under Linux.

I ended up building a desktop PC w/ RX 9070XT and zero crashes.
Note this is the 2023 model with an open SO-DIMM slot, not the updated 2024 model (with soldered RAM)
It's an upgrade. Open slot means you can easily slot in a stick of ram to bump up the total ram to 32 or 48GB.

wow that's concerning. do you think it was an issue with your particular laptop or is it something to do with this laptop model?
It might have just been me, but I feel like back then when I bought it, there was commentary about making sure you have a warranty on it given similar issues.

Really, it seems to be running fine right now. The bluetooth issue is just sort of annoying, but not annoying enough to go out to buy a new computer. I have a growing suspicion that there's an issue with the video card causing the restarts or at the very least issues switching between the onboard GPU and the GPU card. If it gets worse, I'll probably look at changing things up. My current thinking is actually a miniPC with an external GPU instead.

FYI - My 4/16/2025, Asus Vivobook S 15 review on Best Buy:

I kept getting the Blue Screen of Death. The Geek Squad "FIXED it" THREE times, but shortly after I got it home, same thing, BSOD!
Sent it into the Asus service center, and when I got it back 15 days later, got BSOD twice within 4-min.
Asus said the WARRANTY does NOT include any replacements or refunds.

I will never buy another ASUS product. And will avoid buying from Best Buy also.

FYI - Asus has a D- at Better Business Bureau - https://www.bbb.org/us/ca/fremont...1116-16870

Used gaming laptops since 2008. They've become progressively more challenging to manage in terms of cooling as well as the hodgepodge of software, especially with switchable graphics. I also built up a desktop and life has been much more peaceful. A gaming laptop is helpful only in extreme situations where it is absolutely impossible to have the place/time to game on a desktop.

I really wanted to like this laptop. It has a good build quality, PD charging 100watts via Thunderbolt. Has Thunderbolt! Reminds me of a Razer laptop I had 3 years ago. Solid build and construction.

I was able to upgrade with WIFI 7, DDR32 ; bringing it up to 48GB, and two M2. slots.

In theory, this was a perfect machine for my needs except the 1080p screen which didn't bother me as it would be docked on a desktop with a good monitor.

1080p screen on 16" in 2025 (or even 2023) is a crime as well as 8gb VRAM on a mid range graphics card.
Absurd.
No, 8GB vram is not enough to play AA/AAA games at ultra/high presets with stability, and it will not be enough to do so a few years from now.

In 2017, I bought an open-box ASUS ROG GL702VS with i7 7700HQ and GTX 1070 8Gb for about $1200. That thing lasted me until thr end of 2023 and only reason I bought a cheaper costco pre-built and upgrade the GPU was to play Starfield and cyberpunk comfortably.

This laptop will not last you 6 years of solid decent performance on high end games if you buy it in 2025 for a thousand dollars.

Huh, the votes and comments here are singing very different tunes. Seems like a great deal for the specs though, and I need a personal machine for game dev projects and co-working. Anyone know the wattage for the GPU?

I feel you. I also enjoyed tinkering with machines and repasted my laptops myself. I had a 24gb ram Thinkpad back in 2012. Also managed to get egpu working around 2015, I think. I also kept 2 gaming laptops at one point, a 17 inch Omen docked at home and an ASUS Tuf for gaming while traveling. Yet just quitting the idea of high-end gaming on laptops and getting a desktop instantly made life much easier. At one point, all the tinkering, maintenance and upgrades gets to you and you want hassle-free gaming without monitoring temps and fan speeds all the time. In fact, having more fun as now I have a thinkpad for laptop needs, and am enjoying playing classics such as the OG fallouts and other CRPGs on it. I like this bifurcation of experiences.
