Upon checking with customer support online, this does require 60 days of uninterrupted service to get unlocked. Also for someone who already has a line active, adding a new line can get the $60 plan for $40 or lower (with auto pay).

Also. embracing for the time machine jokes, I still think 16e 128gb at $299 for the phone, was a better deal and might come back - far superior processor, 8gb ram, Apple AI support, longer os update support, convenient usb-c port instead of lightning etc. These far outweigh the potential advantages from 14 plus - 256gb, dual camera, magsafe, larger screen size etc for me.
Not true for everyone/every use case, agreed. YMMV
Is this something where you can get the device, pay a month, and then bail? And if so, could the phone be unlocked? (Sorry, if this is an ignorant question, I'm a noob.)
Yeah, the policy changes since April 1st has caused a lot of confusion. I purchased the 16e precisely on April 1 and despite the policy changes being published after I bought and they are not the same for Verizon prepaid as for mnvos, I am still going to recharge another month for my 16e, given it will need me to pay ($60 - $25 monthly discount on 16e deal - $10 from auto pay = $25) only. If I don't pay for the 2nd month and Verizon refuses to unlock in lack of 60 days of service, then worst case, I will have to pay for another consecutive 60 days at a much higher rate since I will loose the $25 discount. So, for $25+tax more, I am willing to pay to avoid any such risk.
YMMV

I'm confused as to what "unlock" means. Would I be able to use this for with AT&T after the 60 days?

While I've read this in the first post:

"Verizon Prepaid is a no-contract prepaid wireless service. You may end service at anytime."

I'd like to double check if one would only really need to spend 364.99 + $ 60 to get the 512gb unlocked?

Would Verizon have any cancellations fees?

Do they sometimes give you a hard time by suddenly charging your account for the 3rd month? Perhaps Verizon charging you full price of the phone (699.99) if you suddenly stop paying the monthly prepaid services?

Thanks.

additional cash back available from 2 x Rs; pick your poison

One offers $75 New Service (Phone Plans) or $15 add-a-line / new prepay customers. Not sure if New Service = postpaid only.

The other offers $80 new account / add a line of service (not sure if prepaid included) or $40 for prepaid line on new account. But it also says you can combine both offers so possibly get the $40 + $80? On the promotion it shows both; $40 in big font and then $80 in small font.
My Capital One Savor card gets $41 back, I used that

Clearly you aren't looking to sell the phone at this time. So as long as it works for your wife's postpaid service, that is what matters. Do you plan to sell it, in a few years? Do you think you'll ever want to switch from Verizon to something else while still owning the phone? I think you have to activate the phone on prepaid for it to have the chance for a proper unlock. Not sure if prepaid/postpaid overlaps but I would consider activating first even if you ant to switch it immediately.

You don't need to immediately cancel a month of prepaid service, because it's prepaid. You can let the plan run out if you don't want future months of service.
She is on a family plan (and has been for years) so I doubt she's interested in moving it elsewhere, and she's been using an iPhone 11 since it came out so I doubt she'll be in any hurry to upgrade, only upgrading because I got her this, otherwise she was content with what she had. But "you never know" so I guess I'll activate it. I don't mind paying an extra month (as it'll only be $30 more) and just keep it on the current plan to unlock it prior to moving it to her line to assure everything works smoothly. Even with the extra $30 this price (all in $310 up front + the $30, so $340) is still cheaper than buying a used "mint condition" 256gb version elsewhere. The "cheapest" one I found was at 80% battery health, with scratches, for around this price, so even at $340, this is a "slick deal" to me.

From what I understood based on others posts and goog'n a bit, the "unlock timer" restarts once you move to another eSIM, so I figured even if the timer started when I moved it to a her post-paid, it'd just take 60d from them to unlock. But perhaps I misinterpreted the wording.

So Verizon prepaid will always work with a postpaid sim? That's been tested?
I cannot find any example of this elsewhere unfortunately -- From what I gather, these phones are eSIM only -- I was thinking I could slap her SIM in it and be fine, but that doesn't appear to be the case as it has no SIM slot, so we'll have to contact Verizon and have them do it =( wonkwonk

This is a great phone for this price.

I really wish Apple had switched to USB-C for this model and at this price.

I've already switched to USB-C for all my portable electronics so going back to lightning for my main device I use everyday is a deal breaker.

Excellent deal for those who don't mind and still use lightning.

I really wish Apple would have made a iPhone 16e Plus model.

But c'est la vie I'll live with the $100 16e from US cellular

Verizon Postpaid: Per Verizon's official policy, handsets sold on postpaid plans remain locked for 60 days after purchase/activation, then auto‑unlock. "Devices that you purchase from Verizon are locked for 60 days after purchase… After 60 days, we will automatically remove the lock"verizon.com. This 60‑day rule (no mention of any extra payment) remains in effect for all postpaid devices.

Verizon Prepaid: Likewise, Verizon's published policy locks prepaid phones only 60 days after activation, with no additional paid‑service requirementverizon.com. After 60 days the lock is removed. In other words, Verizon's own prepaid service is unaffected by any new policy – it still follows the standard 60‑day unlocking ruleverizon.com.

Verizon MVNOs ("Value" brands): By contrast, Verizon's affiliated prepaid brands (the "Verizon Value" or MVNO carriers such as TracFone, Straight Talk, Visible, Total Wireless, etc.) have new unlock rules effective 4/1/2025. Under those rules a device is only unlocked after 60 days of paid service in addition to 60 days after activation. For example, a summary of the Value‐brand policy states that phones activated on Verizon's network will unlock only "60 days after paid Activation and 60 days of paid active service"tracfonereviewer.blogspot.com. In practice this means two months of service (roughly $60 in prepaid charges) must be paid before the unlock occurs. Visible (Verizon's own mobile app brand) explicitly confirms this in its terms: after 4/1/2025 a phone "will automatically unlock 60 days after activation date with two months (60 days) of paid active service now required"doctorofcredit.com.

In summary: Verizon's official policies for its postpaid and prepaid plans remain a simple 60‑day wait (no mention of extra fees)verizon.com. The only parties subject to the new 60‑day paid‑service requirement are the Verizon‑based MVNO brands (Straight Talk, TracFone, Visible, etc.)tracfonereviewer.blogspot.comdoctorofcredit.com. Postpaid customers and Verizon's own prepaid customers are still eligible for unlock after 60 days in good standing, as beforeverizon.com.

So I purchased the 16e deal at the end of march. I have already paid for my second month so when it's time to pay the third month I will switch carriers because the service in my area is bad. If I don't renew for the third month, will the device be unlocked automatically or do I need to contact Verizon? If I don't pay right away after the second month ends, will my number get cancelled and won't be able to transfer?

Afaik the device unlocking is automatic unless the phone is marked as stolen or the bill is past due (not in good standing).

Perfect, I just sold my 16 pro max for $825. I don't need anything special in my phone, since I'm more of a cellular tablet guy.

Do I need to keep the $60 unlimited plan for two months or can I switch to a lower priced plan after the first month?

Unfortunately no. The person that posted this promotion did not provide all details with this deal. You have to remain with Verizon prepaid for 10 months at the minimum for the promotional credits. Its just not worth it for the price of their Unlimited plans.

Could I get this phone and use it without a data plan? I'm looking for a phone I can just use on wifi and access the app store.

To get this device for the $250 deal price (or $300 for the 512GB model), the only requirement is to buy it with one month of the $60 Unlimited (or the $65 Unlimited Plus) prepaid plan. There is absolutely no requirement to stay on "for 10 months at the minimum" in order to have and keep the device at the deal price.
So, out the door, it's $310 or $360 (+taxes/fees) for the device and one paid month, total.

Again, you do NOT need to remain with VZ Prepaid for any more than the one paid $60/$65 month to get and keep this device at the deal price.
