The lightning connector however has become the micro-USB of today.... dead tech, but many people still have old stuff still using them.... like my mom!
I'd send her a set, but recently gifted her a bunch of usba->lightning

I don't understand why this statement is made on every USB-A deal. There are literally millions of phones and iPads in use with lightning tech. Move on, tired argument that has no validity.
