My thoughts too. Doesn't sway me either way, but makes sense and is a good view point. I can certainly see how I'd use one.

And the kindle is just as useless in some situations. laugh out loud The same with a notebook or a desktop. It's going to be a niche item and I'm actually pretty excited for it. Something that's bigger than an iPod touch/iPhone that I can use for web browsing, book reading, and something that can be used in the kitchen as cookbook. I like it.
Except the Kindle was never meant to be some device that "bridged the gap between smartphones and notebooks". It's meant for just one purpose and was advertised as such. It also doesn't cost $500-$700. And did you really just say a notebook is good in certain situations? laugh out loud

A laptop could easily be used for the purposes you mentioned as well and might actually be easier to use for those purposes as well.

Sure a note book could work, particularly one with a touch screen. I like the concept of having an additional device like this that is somewhere between my smartphone and my laptop. For me a notebook is good in certain situations, but I don't necessarily want to use it to read the news when lying in bed or on the couch or bring it into my kitchen to pull up recipes on. That's not practical to me.

t least in my personal life I can see where I'd have a use for it. Dontknow Not sure I'd justify the $499 for it.. but it's definitely something to consider.

It looks nice. I like the big touchscreen keyboard, much more roomier than that of the Iphone.

But I wouldn't spend more than $100 on it if I had to buy it. It's highly overpriced (even the cheapest version).

I just can't think of a practical use for it. MAYBE if I was a traveling business person, it would be a good alternative to a heavy laptop... if it has the same functionality that is.

I guess I'm confused about this thing. WTH is its purpose in life?

Supposed to be between a smartphone and laptop essentially.

You wouldn't spend more than $100 on something that costs more than $100 to make? Confused The iPhone costs $174 to make. I'm pretty sure this will exceed that. It's probably pretty fairly priced for allowing Apple to make a profit.

Interesting indeed, but they got one thing wrong. The apple TV wasn't a failure because there was no market, but rather because apple couldn't predict what the market wanted, aka, the sweet spot. In this case their niche is just too damn small and without subscription television content deals you can't attract mainstream consumers who are perfectly content with their cable boxes.

My concern with the iPad is that it isn't going to do anything really well. Gaming will be meh, but never reach hardcore gamers. Ebook reading would be neat, but lack of battery life may detract from that. Videos are grand, but lack of 16:9, format support and storage kill that. Productivity, not a chance in hell. Web surfing, well now you might be onto something. And you know what, that middle of the road stance might just be enough to hook all those people who are ok with those shortcomings just to have a multi-functional device.

Based on that article, it sounds like this could be the market Apple is trying to target which has really worked for them in the past.

I'm holding out hope that Steve gives them away to his employees like he did with the original iPhone, though I'm not holding my breath and won't be too surprised if he doesn't. In any case, I should be able to get my employee discount on it.

They certainly don't cheap out on their parts. My boss was marveling at the macbook body which is CNCed out of solid aluminum and he estimated it would cost apple, not us, almost $100 just for that piece. Not to mention the amount of custom CNC machines they would need just to keep up with their sales numbers is mind boggling.

But I do think it's a steep price. If the top of the line maxed out at $500 I could definitely see that. As it is though the top of the line device comes way too close to their lowest end laptop. I would go for a laptop anyday over this though. I would have loved to see a full fledged laptop with this interface, i.e., a tablet mac that works well.

The no flash issue has its pros and cons, but if we break it down the purpose of flash, it may not seem all THAT bad.

Video
One of the biggest reasons is for video via YouTube, Hulu, and others. Netflix is Silverlight, so thats a whole different argument. YouTube already has a native app and is implementing HTML5 [blogspot.com] which works on the iPhone and should work on the iPad. Vimeo has also started doing the same thing [vimeo.com]. What about Hulu? Well, Hulu does have a desktop app and its just whether or not they want to implement a iPhone / iPad app. They have resisted against otherstrying to put Hulu on other devices [gigaom.com]. Hulu likely won't go with the HTML 5 route because you can save the source of the video with ease [Demo [neosmart.net]], which the studios probably don't want people to do. I'm not sure if you can disable this, so correct me if I'm wrong. Dispute over the HTML5 Video codec [arstechnica.com] will make adoption of this take longer. If Hulu gets on the iPad via an App, HTML5, a hack, or by other means I could care less about using flash for video. It certainly is possible to run a variant of flash on an iPhone right now [github.com].

Games
Flash games is an important thing to some people, which includes Facebook games. Yeah no excuse for this, it won't happen though because Apple want people to go through their App Store to get native games. Sadly, there is no replacement for some Facebook games like Farmville. In Apples defense, flash is absolutely a CPU hog and drains battery quickly even on simple flash stuff. But how much better does a native app perform versus a flash app, that is hard to test and would be an apple vs orange comparison. Apple should give people options, but we know Apple has never been known for a company to do that.

Websites
Some websites, especially businesses, are heavy on flash or even 100% flash based. There is nothing to do about this, except complain to either Apple to support flash or the webmasters for making a site flash heavy. I can think of a couple of times where I wish I had flash support on my iPhone to quickly check a business, only to find out everything is done in flash. So while this is a negative, its not a deal breaker for me.

On the surface, the iPad isn't that great and the lack of Flash support doesn't help. However, the iPad does have potential. Some may argue that the iPhone really took off when it got hacked and the thousands of apps showed up in the App Store. But Apple has a lot of dedicated Mac developers, and I'm sure we'll see a lot of great apps for the iPad. Until then its just an evoltionary product that got hyped up like crazy. Add an elegant free solution to watching shows on the iPad, and I won't need flash.

I wrote my opinion on the iPad on my blog here [navarinounincorporated.com].

I see the uses, but the restrictions make me cringe. (So I made the pic attached to summarize my thoughts). laugh out loud
