Just to note- if you prefer to use the cigarette lighter to connect, it will only charge the system if your cigarette lighter stays on after you turn the vehicle off. Also, 10w is the absolute minimum power I'd bank on for maintaining a trickle charge.
I have had this for 4 months or so, and it works great! Before I had frequent dead battery since I don't drive a lot. Now never a problem.

I mounted the solar panel into my sunroof under the glass, and routed the wires through the trim to the OBD port, which allows always on charging in my older car.
So apparently there's no charge controller? That doesn't seem like a good thing That high of a voltage might also trigger my high voltage sensor than triggers on my check engine light. It's easy enough to reset with my android car audio with the Torque Pro App via OBDII (I've done it more than once) but it never feels right to clear the check engine lights without actually fixing any problems.

Follow up : I asked AI is it safe to use solar panels with an open circuit voltage of 20V. to charge my car battery?

AI Answer : Using a solar panel with an open circuit voltage of 20V to charge a 12V car battery can be safe, but it's recommended to use a solar charge controller to prevent overcharging. This controller helps manage the voltage and current, ensuring the battery is charged properly without damage.

Even though the price is great, I think I'm gonna have to pass after digging it to it a little bit.

Yup. Barely 500mA at peak performance is going to do very little (I can't believe they sell a 5 watt model). Most trickle chargers are 1-2 amps and even they can have difficulty with modern cars that don't actually turn off when you turn them off.
These really should be marketed as charge maintainers rather than trickle chargers, and even that will be a stretch under anything but perfect conditions. There is no situation where you will put this on a dead battery and come back, even a week later, to be able to start the car.

Did you check peak voltage? Based on reviews, this thing apparently doesn't clamp the voltage at all, meaning you can get 18-20V in peak sunlight. Doesn't matter that the current is small, that voltage can lead to electrolysis and gas generation and kill your battery. Just wondering if it's been revised/fixed since those reviews were posted

I often have to jump the battery of my car during winter time when it gets to 0 degrees. This might help

Question. Is this something that can just be hooked up, then left hooked up, even during starting the car and using the car normally? It'd be nice if I could do a more permanent/semi-permanent wiring/install job and just leave it hooked up indefinitely and not have to worry about it.

I would not be able to recommend something like this to anyone, as if I recall correctly the OBD2 port draws power through the ecm so any wonky voltage or short might damaged the ecm for the engine and that might be a bit more expensive than a battery. Do you have the solar panel connected to something that is regulating output voltage/amps to the obd2 port?

Picked this up about 6mo ago for my 80yo mother's 18 CR-V that is known for having a parasitic drain. She doesn't drive the vehicle either (recently sold it) - was always having to use the jump box. Plugged this into the OBD-II and laid it on the dash. Never had to jump it again.

Highly recommend getting one with a charge controller, which this one does not.

i own 2 of the previous 7.5 watt version and work well for my needs. it came with clips AND OBD2 connectors. i would buy one of these if it had the OBD2 connector. But the Cig lighter seems useless to me.

I wonder what is greater:

- Charging through this device in a cigarette port.
- The drop of battery energy from turning the vehicle dash on so that the cigarette port powers up to charge through this device.

I will check it when I have a chance. Thanks for the heads up. Have had it for months, and battery seems fine.

10W is really weak unless you're mounting it externally and staring at the sun. I've been using a 20W through ODB2 for 3 years.

When I park the car for summer travel over the summer for 8 weeks I just disconnect the battery and also have a NOCO jumper just in case. Never had an issue since I learned I better disconnect the battery before though, otherwise likely dead, which cost me a battery the first time I did this.
