If you don't take Samsung's word on their Renewed Phones web site that they put in a new battery, there's a free app called Accu-Battery that will monitor several charges to 100% and compares the charged amount against the battery's rated capacity. If it's 100% of rated capacity, it's (functionally) new.

Buying used from the internet vs renewed from Samsung is very different. Renewed is like a new phone, 100% new battery, new IMEI, full Samsung 1-year warranty and eligible for their paid extension. So not even close to a regular "mint" on on the used market.

S21/22/23 will only get you 4 years worth of updates, the S24 will get you 7 years of updates. The S22 is widely regarded as the worst pick due to reduced battery capacity etc. Better pick S23 or S24 if possible.
Otherwise consider the S24 FE which can be found on sale with some pre-paid carriers at times.

I have two old, working S5 phones sitting in a drawer. I'm currently rocking an A52 5G which stopped getting updates in April, but does everything I need.

Thoughts on me getting the S24 for $319? I know it's not top of line, but the S24+ just doesn't seem practical for what I need, considering it's $300 more!

Advice appreciated....

My S20 sufferers from the green line on the display problem. Does that qualify? It's not broken or anything.

I don't see any option for that. you need device that turns on and screen works normally for Partial trade-in value.

I always buy unlocked phones. The Google Pixel phones (and no A series) are my go to phones. I keep my phones as long as possible. My Pixel XL was bought in 2018. Still works like a top. (I don't use it anymore, but keep update all the apps.)
I can't bring myself to buy anything google badged.
However, I do believe that in the US, its good to have choices and to freely use those choices.
My comment was with antenna bands in mind, not so much brand specific phones.
Also, I spend lots of time in the boonies and having a basic cell signal is an absolute must for work. Which is why I have an ATT and VZ locked phones.

All this discussion about bands may be moot soon, given that satellite calling is on the way.

"If you do not send your trade-in device, or it does not meet the eligibility requirements, Samsung reserves the right to disable your New Samsung Product remotely"
Kinda wild to me that's on there, I feel like they would usually just charge your credit card or something

Sounds Orwellian. Welcome to the dystopian 21st century.

Do not buy S22 Ultra especially refurb or used. You never know if it will have the dreaded signal problem that many people are reporting (i found out after I started having the same issue) and carriers/samsung denies that it's a hardware issue. My phone is in pristine conditions not a scratch on screen after 3+ years of usage, it will refuse to maintain signal, and once drops the signal below certain threshold or whatever it is, it simply says No Signal or Searching for Signal or Emergency Only. It won't re-register itself until you turn airplane mode ON and then Off, then suddenly signal!? WHAT? Until it drops again. So, definitely don't buy S22 Ultra especially at these prices.
Had a phone that did that. One fix was installing a custom ROM.

Can I trade in a phone locked to boost mobile?
Yes. Carrier lock is fine. It's blacklisted that's not allowed.

you certainly can. Most don't care if a phone is carrier locked, it just cannot be blacklisted. Apple, Samsung, T-Mobile you can trade-in locked phones for sure.

Can I trade-in s7 edge instead of regular s7? There is s7 edge option in the list of phones eligible for trade-in.
I would be very careful with the models. They tend to nitpick anything possible. Sometimes it shows a category for "other Samsung" or "other android" or "other iPhone" then that should fit. I traded in an iPhone 4S or so not too long ago as "other iPhone" for $300 as well.

This is just not a good deal at least for the S24 Ultras.
I've been monitoring the refurbished price for those on Amazon and you can get BETTER prices on those WITHOUT a trade-in for the past 4 months (at least)
"Refurbished" on Az or the Bay is a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide raaaaaaaaaaaaange of quality in many cases. I just returned a bunch of "refurbished excellent" watches back to w00t as subpar and not with battery levels they were supposed to have. With this Samsung deal you are essentially buying a new phone. Could you get something close elsewhere for less, sure, but requires some searching, some educated guesses, some trust, and some trial and error until you find a good seller you can rely on. And even then sometimes you have to order 2+ to get a keeper.

IMHO nothing wrong with an S24, quite the contrary. It's a fantastic phone. Here you could get a seriously "new" like one and recycle these old S5 for good value.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I broke one of the cardinal rules of SD. I thought about it too long. Now the S24 is unavailable (only the S24+ and Ultra which aren't really a good deal). The S23 is available for $269 after trade in, but that doesn't really seem worth it anyway. Oh well, next time I'll act before I think.

Check again on Tuesday. Last time around, they would re-stock once a week.
