See the steps below from https://slickdeals.net/f/17077762-at-t-128gb-samsung-galaxy-s22-ultra-5g-w-added-line-or-new-customer-activation-350-35-activation-free-w-free-s-h?p=167181442#post167181442 (you will have to change to s24 from s22 if you want to flash unlocked firmware) but rest is same.

ATT requires 60 days active before unlocking the phone. However, there is SIM Swap method which worked well in the past for unlocking paid-off ATT phones right away.

0. Do the following steps after paying off the phone fully and then waiting for a day or so for the unlock portal to get the paid off status.

1. ATT changed their unlock policy on 3/18 to require 60 days of service before they can unlock a fully paid device. Previously, it used to be right away if you have paid in full.
2. There two timeline for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. The line activates on right when you place the order not the day you receive the phone on hand so you might have to pay the activation fee of $35.
3. You can use a tello number and port to ATT but you would have to make sure porting is successful by going to https://www.att.com/portstatus/. Many from z fold 3 got stuck in porting limbo and got the ATT account cancelled.
4. As with many deals here, a SIM swap method is found which can be used to unlock the device. This was working recently but not sure if ATT would fix it by the time you try it. The steps are as follows.
a. Pay in full for the phone. While your payment will quickly reflect in your account it will be at least a few hours before it updates for the unlock request.
b. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the SIM provided. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then put the SIM in another unlocked phone, reboot, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
c. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of ATT phone and submit an unlock request.DO NOT attempt more than twice or you will be blocked for 24 hours.
d.Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
e. Only cancel the line after you have unlocked the phone.

Then after unlocking if you are feeling adventurous and want to flash the phone to an unlocked firmware to get rid of ATT bloat you can follow these steps. It's actually very easy to do with Odin.

1. There are many models of s22 ultra but in US two models are imp. S908U is carrier locked version and S908U1 is the unlocked US version. The firmware for these versions are interchangeable so you can flash the ATT model with S908U1 firmware.
2. Download patched odin v3.14.1_3B_PatchedD.zip from https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/ as regular odin does not allow flashing mismatched firmware.
3. Download the firmware from S908U1 XAA version from https://samfrew.com/model/SM-S908U1/region/XAA/ Extract as there will be multiple files.
4. Connect S22U to the windows PC.
5 .Put s22u in download/recovery/odin mode. Power down. Press Volume up and down together and then press Volume up to go into recovery (a green screen would appear).
6. Start odin and then select different files for different categories and then start.
7, It should be now the US unlocked version.

FYI for those ordering with ATT, activation fee on the bill can be waived automatically by clicking on "don't recognize this fee" on the bill on web/app even if it's more than 3 days. It's one time (every 12 months or so) favor from ATT. See wiki of this thread https://slickdeals.net/f/17327499-oneplus-nord-n30-5g-128gb-unlocked-chromatic-gray-cph2513-best-buy-0 for more details on bills afterwards.

I ordered online yesterday the ATT one to expect receiving it today. Called both the Ontrac and Walmart since there is no update on tracking. Walmart said it's not in stock so they will send once it is back in stock. Online already showed and still showing it's in stock. Now I will not be able to receive it any time soon and will miss the 1-3 days window to playoff and cancel etc. Too much hassle imo. now I am preparing to cancel the order if no update later today 😞. Credit pull loss

Finally i received end of 3rd day. it was memorial day holiday when i ordered hence the delay. Was able to cancel it 4th day. Will likely get bill including the activation fee which will see if can get waived . Thanks OP

S24 ultra is still available from Verizon..
I keep getting this error: "We are unable to retrieve your account data. Please try again later."

I called Verizon and they say everything looks good on their end in their system. And there is no number for walmart that I could call to fix this, I guess.

Did you get email from VZW about new line/account? If so your line is already activated and the counter for 3 days has started. Unlike ATT, Verizon does not offer one time courtesy waive of activation fee. CS reps can apply any credit but it's hard to convince them.
Is the email subject "NAME, your account email address has been updated."? My phone is supposed to arrive tomorrow (6/16) ordered on 6/8 but Walmart took their sweet time getting it into hands of UPS didn't rush it either. Received the above Verizon email on 6/10. Was my line activated on 6/10? If phone doesn't arrive too late, I hope to pay it off at Verizon store. Should I try to log on to Verizon site in email before phone arrives?

Yeah, you can create an account in Verizon but if you don't have the phone number you cant link the phone line yet.

For those who placed order at Walmart store, can we pay some $ down towards ATT Due i.e. pay more $ than taxes due? Tia.

No, you can only pay the tax to Walmart. Rest of the payment is managed by the carriers.

So what's the consensus with the verizon version? Cancel account with CS or port out number? I couldn't make the device payment in store or chat so waited the 14 days to do it online myself. I guess I'm out of luck now with getting anything back regarding bill (activation and prorated). Wanna know if it matters that I cancel with CS or port out.

Both works. The cancellation with the reps give you an opportunity to keep the logs etc if things go south but then again there won't be much of a difference as you are 14 days out already. Porting is easier as you just port out and the account automatically cancels. Verizon will send you a final bill afterwards.

Took me quite a few round of chat with ATT to get rid of the bill, somehow those previous agents who promised that they already applied the credit did not work out, finally today's agent was able to do it instantly, 0 bill can be seen immediately via incognito login. So make sure check the bill after the agent "claim" they applied it, and insist on check immediately online, so you do not waste time like me.

I figured out why I could not upgrade or add a line from the Walmart website. I had the Apple One Family plan that did not allow non iPhones to be added to it, I fixed that. I unlocked my credit. But now I get this: "We're unable to verify your address. Please visit your nearest Walmart Mobile Desk and we'll help you upgrade your device" Any ideas?

Off topic but is there any advantage of converting physical sim to esim? Moving my T-Mobile sim from old phone to new phone.
The s24 ultra has dual sim support but there's only one tray for SIM. So is it more common to have physical sim for your primary and getting esim when overseas. Or is it better to convert primary line to esim and keep physical sim for travel?
I've kept the physical sim for now as I was thinking it might be better to swap sim if needed.

I'm in the camp of always keep it pSIM for as long as possible bc it's a one way street once you convert to eSIM (unless you go to a carrier store and request a new pSIM).

As someone mentioned before, make sure your address in Walmart and ATT is exactly same including street abbreviations, apt etc or change it on ATT to make it the same.

Depending on the country you are planning to visit, you might only get pSIMs there. For that reason, it might be better to get eSIM for VM carrier here but eSIMs are tricky to move between phones sometimes.

It seems that your phone was not scanned. I'd open a new account altogether with ATT in the ATT store. Provide them IMEI of an unlocked phone if they want and get a physical SIM and use that on S24, do SIM swap and cancel the line and also the previous tentative account if possible.
Hi @gadgetNerd. Thanks a million! The phone was indeed not scanned. I went to an AT&T store, got a number and activated the sim by inserting it in the new s24 plus. I saw that it already showed 'Unlock Eligible' on the account online. Then I swapped the sim to another unlocked phone. I tried clicking 'refresh my connection' on the account page and it took me to a new page where it showed the other unlocked phone under 'My device'. So, I thought it's already reflecting on the account and went ahead and made an unlock request as a non-AT&T user as per the steps. Right after making that request, when I went back to my AT&T profile page, the device shown in the profile was the new Phone and not the unlocked phone in which the sim was at that time.

The unlock got approved and I inserted another sim in the new Phone and it asked for the unlock code, I entered it and it worked. But, on the account profile, the new phone is shown and it still says 'Unlock Eligible'. Anything to worry here? Or I'm good? Please advise if I can go ahead and cancel the wireless line.
