I think now the unlock policy of boost is maintaining service with them for one full year?

Yes. Many people do this deal just for that purpose alone.

So can someone get the phone traded in shortly after getting this phone and switch the other carrier as well?

For sure. They tax you on MSRP, plus at least $35 activation. I went in-store 1-2 years ago to see about getting a $99 Razr upgrade. Final cost was $250-300. I said wtf, and she said "It's a $799 phone". lmao.

It's funny because the website doesn't charge tax on the full MSRP like they do in the store.
I guess I should just see about picking up the 15 on the website for $200 instead, then I don't have to futz with porting in a number.

Yes, network locked phones aren't a problem.

If you do it on the website, don't you get the net $200 price paid back via service credits, or is it $200 flat?

If you can unlock the phone, they will accept it, but if it locked, you can't trade in, as like you said, it might be obtained illegally, such as stolen,….
