Lots of battery shenanigans going on with Google for this phone. My guess is that theyve had a lot of complaints with this hot running phone toasting batteries.

Battery life and heat problems were caused by the cellular modem when operating at 5G. Setting the preferred network to 4G/LTE solved those issues for me. Battery life went from 2 days or less to 6-7 days and the phone no longer got hot with data usage. I got my Pixel 6a new for $50 in 2023 from a Metro Mobile deal. Though if I was to buy a phone today I would spend a bit more and get a deal on a Pixel 9a.
