The U shape one was recently recalled for mold. They both are AWESOME units except for you know.....dying from mold.
Can you give a link for "extended hose from Amazon." Thanks.
This recall involves Midea U and Midea U+ Window Air Conditioners. The air conditioners are white and are about 22 inches wide, 13.5 inches tall, and 19 inches deep. The air conditioners are designed to fit in windows and are available in three sizes of cooling power: 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTU. The model number can be found on a label on the front right side of the unit when facing the air conditioner. The following model numbers are included in the recall:

I immediately noticed the high pitched whine (that some described as a high frequency field of crickets) and unfortunately, many reports say that it's due to the PWM compressor circuit, a feature that is common to all Midea manufactured inverter portables. It's my only complaint about these units, but it's not a total deal breaker, as I can assimilate the sound after awhile.
Does anybody else hear that high frequency noise when the compressor is running?
[edit] here are numerous threads about the topic

To verify that I'm not imagining the high frequency inverter noise, I recorded audio of the compressor running and looked at it in a spectrum analyzer. The main peak is around 5.5Khz with smaller peaks at 17.9Khz and 11.9Khz, in order of decreasing amplitude. The reddit thread I posted also confirms the 5.5 Khz tone. If anyone cares, it would be helpful for those claiming not to hear a noise to verify it, as it's a reported issue with the unit.
Here are two test tones of the noise:

What's the level of mold build up? Any reason what caused mold?
I don't know why it had so much mold. Overuse in AC mode? Never needed to be drained, but maybe just the condensation in the air caused it. You can't even get to the spinning fan drum deep inside it which had as much black mold as the rotating vent. I always kept the filters cleaned. Realistically maybe I should have setup the drain hose. Never felt the need though as the house has low humidity with a central air system and it cycled its own dry mode. The mold wasn't like omg thick, but it was enough to see it everywhere. I didn't take pictures while it was apart.

Thank you for the details.
I have also drilled several drain holes, pressure washed the outside unit. But that didn't remove the mold that had already in the unit.
I was completely caught off guard too. I thought the weird smell is from the outside and not the unit. And breathing issues are perhaps another variant of COVID-19. Lol
These units offer evaporative feature, but I drain mine out in a gallon jug and empty it every 2-3 days. If not, it uses the water to splash around and cool the fins. Yes it helps to keep with efficiency but it will corrode within 1-2 years and you'll have a refrigerant leak or mold issues. Older AC units last for at least 10 years. The newer ones are about meeting efficiency. I'd rather not have water sitting in my unit that is constantly in the thin copper or aluminum fins.
Do u have picture of your work? This is dual hose model with some weird vent/intake design and the link provided only has circle hose
