The volume of a cylinder varies with the square of the radius. Going from 1/2" to 5/8" increases the cross sectional radius by 25%, and when you square that, you see that the cross sectional area - and by extension the volume - are increased by 56%. However, flow rate (what many people mean when they say "pressure"), according to Poiseuille's Law, actually varies with the fourth power of the radius. In this case, this could mean up to a 144% increase in flow rate, assuming the actual water pressure can support that increase in flow.
It won't.
More volume, yes. more pressure, no.

1/2" hose… 5/8" doesn't sound much bigger, but it's actually 50% larger. More water, more water pressure.

How would it be more pressure?

true.... many reviewers on different variants complaint about 1/2" hose not giving enough pressure.

I have been on market for new retractable hose reel and this brand is totally unknown. Must be some kickback slickdeals is getting on this post hence making it to the front page.

Hard pass for me due to 1/2" and totally new brand with no known history of durability and reliability of their product.

Increased hose diameter will not increase water pressure.

For what it worth, I actually like my 1/2 inch hose (giraffe, not this one). The water flow is ok to water a few garden beds. And it is light enough for everyone in the family to handle. I've got a Y splitter and a 100ft 5/8 hose from costco for the rare case I need an increased flow. So it really depends on your use case.

Does anyone know what brand to get that uses more metal/durable internal parts? which one is built to last? Reviews I read on most models say they last about 2 years, and internal parts are all made of plastic.
hoselink and gardena are the main go-to's, which cost a little more but have pretty positive feedback across the board compared to others. there are others that people generally seem to like, like glahoden and giraffe plus whatever new random brands popped up that year (ex. himimi, check YT reviews).
but if you wanted to just buy one and done with zero regrets I'd fork up the slight extra for one of the first two (I am waiting on a gardena sale).

Not to be too controversial, but can someone explain to me the appeal of this product over a shrink/pocket hose ? I have seen many of these recently installed on neighbors' houses and not only do they look unsightly (to me at least), but they've all required drilling into the masonry of the front of the home, doing permanent damage to brick work. Pocket hoses which self-shrink after use and roll up into a nice, tidy package seem to me to still be the end-all solution for garden hoses.
The shrink hoses are prone to bursting and are not near the length of these. They are basically just a balloon inflating and deflating constantly - they will break. They are fine for light duty and short stuff like watering your mint plants - but if you need more length and durability, look elsewhere.
And personally, most people just leave the shrink hose on the ground, which looks unsightly itself.

More water does not equate to more pressure. I am not so certain that you have completed your schooling.

Yep Hoselink is high quality but expensive
Have a hoselink and love it. I wish they would use their retracting design for an extension cord as well. It's really nice how it has that little rider that moves back and forth to coil the hose.

Great explanation. Always buy the large pizza!

Buy the model at Costco. If if breaks in two years return it. The reviews of some of these on YouTube, such as the crappy gladhoden ones never account for longevity as they will break and that brand is a no name Chinese brand that paid off a bunch of reviewers.

I have Costco one, it's good nothing to complain about. It's also 5/8th diameter which makes a huge difference when I compare it to my dog parks giraffe branded 1/2" diameter. There is a lot more pressure with 5/8th and I wouldn't get anything less if you plan or use it for car washing, pressure washing, etc. if you're only using for garden or light watering 1/2" if perfectly fine.

One is shorter than the other.

On all of these, you should look at reviews about returns and replacements and longevity. Especially with things that stay out in the weather and sun. Best of luck to find that info on random brands from China. All the reviews on that one are only 2 months old and look paid under the table, that brand will probably disappear in 6-12 months.

I use to get paid in free items by foreign brands to review their items. There is an entire market for it. Criticize me if you want, I like free things. But I won't buy these random brands if better brands exists or stores that have good warranty policies don't carry them (I.e Costco or Home Depot) if I'm worried about them breaking.

Yup agreed. My dog park has 1/2 giraffes as well and it is noticeable how weak the water flow is compared to a 5/8. I got the Costco one too, it's seasonal item my Costco already got rid of them, couldn't even buy it on clearance. It's online though. And Costco's return policy is how they get all my money.
