do these portables last? I bought 3-4 of them in the past, and they only last 1 year, then... freon leak or something, then just blowing air like a fan, expensive fan. Years back, these things cost 400-700 a piece!

I was looking at portable AC recently but after going through some reddit threads, I hesitated as it seems portable AC is very inefficient in term of cooling the room.

One dumb question. I never used this before but thinking to add this to my room because only me working at home and I don't want to turn on the AC for the whole house. Can I use this without connecting to the hose outside and use something to collect the water? Does it save more money?Thank you
I think you can. if it's not a extreme humid conditions at your house. for safety, put a tray underneath it just in case there's any leaks and if you get the E1 error (not sure about the code number) message, you just connect the hose to the bottom and drain it inside a bucket. I have the Midea similar to this one and I never had this issue so far.

they can last a good 5-8 years,
The problem is shipping damage lottery, they leak because it basically comes down the people from UPS/FedEx or the reseller who shipped it and how they handled it.

After reading a few one and two stars reviews .
It's not really portable, weighs 80lbs so not easily movable, needs to be close to the windows, I guess the pipe length is very small too.
Keep that in mind.. Before purchasing

I think it is on casters/wheels which I think helps. All ac units will be heavy I imagine

Anyone used the app to control this? The Midea app is so nice and easy to use, but getting rid of them due to the recall.

If you mean the air hoses, it's required if you want it to work. Otherwise you'll be dumping the heat back into the room.

this unit is really tall. come up to my arms pits. and i am 67 inches.

its about a milk crate square.

i think the other hisense 8000 one is just as good and the profile is just wider. but it is lighter. i kept both. the tubes in back no matter take up space to the window.

Yea generally the condensation will evaporate and be pushed out via the window hose unless you live in an extremely humid environment in which case the unit will alert you that the unit needs to be drained manually via the drain hose, this rarely occurs in most normal environments.

How humid is too humid? South Jersey here

this is listed 78lbs

the other hisense and midea costco models are lighter around 50 to 60.

interesting design. never seen this before.
Dual hose is the way to go (assuming you can't fit a window unit). AC's need somewhere to dump the heat, so these portable ones push it out the window...but that means the air needs to get replaced so it leaks into your house/room from outside. You have to keep cooling a fresh supply of warmer air forever.

Dual hose models can work more like a window unit--they recirculate cool air into the room and then use one hose to pull in fresh air to cool the element and the second hose to push that warm air back outside. Since you are recirculating the air in the room, it cools much faster and with less waste.

I'm half tempted to get one for my office despite having central AC. Its in the 2nd floor above the garage and it gets hot...I really have to blast the AC in the rest of the house to make it comfortable and my windows are too narrow for a window unit. Short of upgrading my whole HVAC to a dual-zone system (or risking the life of the air handler by closing vents/doing a ghetto-rigged dual-zone), this is my best option.

Dual hose + inverter (which this unit has) is the best you can get if you are forced to use a portable AC.

Thanks OP! Literally was looking for one this week.

Pretty good deal for a dual hose unit. Pulled the trigger.

Energy Efficiency Ratio is 13.0 for those of you curious.

What they don't tell you about these is how noisy they are; no good for bedrooms. Even one of the newer 8k BTU Hisense dual hose inverter units is about identical to a bathroom exhaust fan running.
Bought one and returned it the next day, sadly. Really wanted to love it!

You can love it. Wear earmuffs and like magic there is no more noise.
