I know virtually nothing about cameras and camera bodies, even though I have an eBay alert constantly notifying me about lenses for a camera -- my partner's, as they're the camera person, and I try to be the gift buyer, hahaha!
They have had and loved a Nikon D5600 for years now.
Some quick Googling tells me this would be an upgrade in various ways but it seems... It would be incompatible with all of their gear (mounts, lenses) and it has a lower megapixel count?
Would it still be worth the change?
Thank you!
It depends on the level of interest in this hobby. It can go from 1 camera 1 lens to a whole cupboard of gear and everything in between. As a rule, do not buy random things for a photographer, but ask for a wishlist and pick from there.
I got a Z30 a couple months ago. The camera was new in a brown box. Shutter count was 3. Before that I got another camera that look brand new but shutter count was 2700. I have always buy Nikon refurbished and I have 2 dozen different things from them. Always good.
Dynamic range of sensor is the most fundamental spec and D5300 was released in 2013. This camera's output in daylight would be the same to that, 0.5ev better indoor and in darkness. SONY A6600 of 2019 has IBIS and 0.5EV in DR advantage than this, and the $400 more in price will be saved after about 3-5 lenses purchase.
So, my thinking was that A6600 is better than this for photo and zve10ii is better than this for video, even though they are 2 times more expensive. What I bought is zve10ii, together with dirt cheap legacy sony oss e-mount prime and zoom lenses, and a viltrox 27mm for a killer lens.
Since e-mount is 2-3 times more popular than z-mount, I could get viltrox 27mm for $416.5 asking price like new from B&H with 1 year warranty, it's like buying from Taobao annual sale without tariffs and shipping. It wasn't available to Z mount when B&H just had the greatest viltrox sale.
The sony legacy oss lenses I bought are not great and below average today, but nikon is asking way more for similar lenses. I bought a bag of smaller primes for the price of one 18-50mm. Z30 buyers have really few choices, they can't even have sigma 18-50mm, they don't have Z mount VR primes. DX Z-mount zooms are 18-140mm which has way cheaper adapting option, 12-28 , 16-50 and 50-250.
30% isnt on retail price, but rather whole sale, intra company transfer price. It will not be as bad as people think it is. If anything the sales wont be as good as before, but in no way prohibiting or non competitive. Nikon also makes stuff in Japan and Thailand too. I can imagine production of some popular items will move to Thailand.
That MAJOR is pretty meaningful major, Sony and Canon have great footprint in China too, much greater for nikon and fuji. The more cost effective nikon-tamron lenses are made in China too, while tamron lenses for usa can be had from Vietnam and Japan.

Yesterday June 23 was the date new Nikon prices go into effect. You can check for yourself how much prices increase.
I also just fount the nikon 70-180mm has no VR, so equal to g1 tamron 70-180mm not g2. That will be a much greater difference than 36.4%.
LOL, let's say SONY users can save a Z30 worth of money in buying a <$1000 lens.

That Nikon 28 75 2.8 refurbished was on sale for $730 until it sold out this morning. And people keep saying it is the same with Tamron, its not. It is NOT the same lens. They might have used the same glass and design, but the electronics aint. Tamron lenses (and Sigma , Viltrox, Godox etc) might stop working correctly after a firmware update while the Nikon ones still works fine. Current line up of Nikon lenses now are super in performance compared to their older lenses ( and most third party's). There is no reason to buy 3rd party lenses other than cost ( and perhaps some niche lenses like Zeiss). If you just want a cheap camera to mount 3rd party glasses, Nikon aint a good choice since they generally dont license their lens mount. I dont think Canon does either.
