Hello, everyone!

I know virtually nothing about cameras and camera bodies, even though I have an eBay alert constantly notifying me about lenses for a camera -- my partner's, as they're the camera person, and I try to be the gift buyer, hahaha!

They have had and loved a Nikon D5600 for years now.

Some quick Googling tells me this would be an upgrade in various ways but it seems... It would be incompatible with all of their gear (mounts, lenses) and it has a lower megapixel count?

Would it still be worth the change?

Thank you!

It depends on the level of interest in this hobby. It can go from 1 camera 1 lens to a whole cupboard of gear and everything in between. As a rule, do not buy random things for a photographer, but ask for a wishlist and pick from there.

anyone has comment of the Nikon refurbished?TIA

I got a Z30 a couple months ago. The camera was new in a brown box. Shutter count was 3. Before that I got another camera that look brand new but shutter count was 2700. I have always buy Nikon refurbished and I have 2 dozen different things from them. Always good.

I don't follow? Can you break it down clearly. Is it worth getting or something else for less that's similar? That's what I taking from this
Yes, 10 bit video is very much standard for production, or showing to others. Iphone can shoot 10bit since 12 pro.
Dynamic range of sensor is the most fundamental spec and D5300 was released in 2013. This camera's output in daylight would be the same to that, 0.5ev better indoor and in darkness. SONY A6600 of 2019 has IBIS and 0.5EV in DR advantage than this, and the $400 more in price will be saved after about 3-5 lenses purchase.
So, my thinking was that A6600 is better than this for photo and zve10ii is better than this for video, even though they are 2 times more expensive. What I bought is zve10ii, together with dirt cheap legacy sony oss e-mount prime and zoom lenses, and a viltrox 27mm for a killer lens.
Since e-mount is 2-3 times more popular than z-mount, I could get viltrox 27mm for $416.5 asking price like new from B&H with 1 year warranty, it's like buying from Taobao annual sale without tariffs and shipping. It wasn't available to Z mount when B&H just had the greatest viltrox sale.
The sony legacy oss lenses I bought are not great and below average today, but nikon is asking way more for similar lenses. I bought a bag of smaller primes for the price of one 18-50mm. Z30 buyers have really few choices, they can't even have sigma 18-50mm, they don't have Z mount VR primes. DX Z-mount zooms are 18-140mm which has way cheaper adapting option, 12-28 , 16-50 and 50-250.

It is great to switch brand moving to mirrorless. Nikon has major production in China unlike sony and canon, and 30% hit hasn't arrived yet. This could be the last happy hour pretty much. A greater shock than canon's price rise yesterday is probable, while SONY's earlier price increase seemed much less hurting.

30% isnt on retail price, but rather whole sale, intra company transfer price. It will not be as bad as people think it is. If anything the sales wont be as good as before, but in no way prohibiting or non competitive. Nikon also makes stuff in Japan and Thailand too. I can imagine production of some popular items will move to Thailand.

"The Canon EOS R3 which has gone from $3999 to $5399, which is a crazy increase." R3 is made in japan.
That MAJOR is pretty meaningful major, Sony and Canon have great footprint in China too, much greater for nikon and fuji. The more cost effective nikon-tamron lenses are made in China too, while tamron lenses for usa can be had from Vietnam and Japan.

The price of lenses are not too consistent with msrp. Let us check tamron 70-180mm. Greentoenow now has it for $949. refurbished nikon has it listed for $1124+tax, out of stock. Grey market(W's) has it at $1049+tax. That to me a $270 price difference for similar product and support, and $320-370 if you price in new vs like new. 345/949=36.4%. It is $999 vs $1253 from seller amazon.com, it is $1299 vs $1349 in MSRP.
I also just fount the nikon 70-180mm has no VR, so equal to g1 tamron 70-180mm not g2. That will be a much greater difference than 36.4%.
LOL, let's say SONY users can save a Z30 worth of money in buying a <$1000 lens.

That Nikon 28 75 2.8 refurbished was on sale for $730 until it sold out this morning. And people keep saying it is the same with Tamron, its not. It is NOT the same lens. They might have used the same glass and design, but the electronics aint. Tamron lenses (and Sigma , Viltrox, Godox etc) might stop working correctly after a firmware update while the Nikon ones still works fine. Current line up of Nikon lenses now are super in performance compared to their older lenses ( and most third party's). There is no reason to buy 3rd party lenses other than cost ( and perhaps some niche lenses like Zeiss). If you just want a cheap camera to mount 3rd party glasses, Nikon aint a good choice since they generally dont license their lens mount. I dont think Canon does either.

Nikon refurbs are like new. I purchased Nikon refurbs before and all looked like new. The Z30 I purchased had 20 shutter count of which I did 8 and the Nikon tech probably did a few to check it out. My unboxing video shows what to expect.

I just bought the Nikon Z50 16 - 50mm VR Kit for $494.97 ($530 with tax). I need a built-in flash as I pretty much only do photos - so no Z30 for me. I currently have a fairly new Canon T7 DSLR, and I hate that it is so slow to focus. I'll be selling this and the 3 lenses I got for it to help pay for the Z50.
