That and honestly when I did some checking it's hard to find the "good" 2.5 ssd drives for sale in terms of say "sold and shipped by amazon" for example anymore, the emphasis more is on m2 drives

Yep, can confirm. I've had a couple that I've had good luck with, but others that went south pretty quick, ESPECIALLY the larger ones. (Which, of course, are the ones that make it easier to lose a whole bunch of stuff all at once when it craps out.)

I have a couple as scratch disks and they work fine, obviously not speed demons but for stuff like media it doesn't matter.
2023 was a great time to stock up on storage. not sure if it will ever go that low again
That said I feel like all these sata drives need to be cheaper, it's not like they need the high speed interface or memory
I just picked up a seagate 26TB external drive for 237 dollars within the last week. So I will pass today on this drive.
Also Amazon prime day is in less than 10 days away. I can wait to see what other drives are on sale.
