what is so special about this goop? why not some canola oil or bacon grease?

Bacon grease is high in saturated fat which leads to fat oxidation in cast iron. Therefore, it is not ideal for the initial seasoning of cast iron. Instead, use it to enhance and/or maintain the seasoning of cast iron.

It's $5.50 for me in NJ. I don't know why you would use this instead of coconut oil or avocado oil. The ingredients are Palm oil, Canola oil, Beeswax, and Soy oil.

NOTHING. use canola oil. this stuff is a complete rip off. use any fat/oil/grease that has a high smoke point(400+). no need to use anything expensive which is why canola or corn oil is usually the best.

bacon fat has a very low smoke point (330ish)

that siad, i have used bacon fat for reseasoning in a pinch when camping... it just takes longer.

Vegetable Oil - both slick in the grease sense and in the spirit of this website. I can't believe someone would spend money on some silly snake oil or whatever kind of magical oil this is claimed to be.
