You might want to check out some comparisons between the 5800X and the 5900XT. The performance difference isn't much, and if you're gaming, you'd be much better off with an X3D variant (5800X3D or above).

Im pretty dumb so gonna as a dumb question. This wouldn't just slot into a 4 year old PC that has a ryzen 5 chip in it would it?
You can check if your motherboard has a bios update available to support it, but it should physically fit in any AM4 motherboard.

5600x upgrade? Any bundle deals? Looking for MATX board with optical
Depends on your use case but if purely for gaming, its not a huge upgrade imo and id rather go for an 3xd or save up for AM5

Get your motherboard model and go online to the manufacturer website and check the bios update section to see if there is a bios that would support Ryzen 5000 series. If so, you can download and update the bios in order for this 5900xt to boot up.

So tempted to swap my 5700X for this, but I rarely transcode video anymore and that's the only thing this would improve for me.

I would also mention 5700x3d if budget restrictions.

I may do this and replace my (back-up/game server rig) with a 3900x in it ; but prefer the price on the 5900xt to come down abit more ..... under $200 prefered .
But driving down to the MC here in S.Calif is a PAIN in the arse !
or
I just may put my 5900x in the server /backup and just go for a newer package (chip/mobo/mem) deal at MC for a 9900x/9950x setup (to replace my current 5900x game rig) ; but that would be about $700+ with good a x870 board .

But if this 5900xt lowers more fairly soon , I'll go that route and hold off for AMD ZEN 6 release .

I wish posters would include the socket type in the first post so I don't have to google every CPU deal.

Yes, you'll need a video card. The AM4 chips didn't have an iGPU unless it has a G at the end of the name.
