The MX series hasn't been in stock for months now and the BX hasn't dropped under $200 since last year

They are one of the better dram cacheless drives. I can think of half a dozen brands that are in the category your referring to lol

This drive is JUNK, even by DRAM-less SATA standards. Plan to eventually regret purchasing it.

No, it's actually one of the worst. I don't know if it's faulty firmware or something else but these drives seem to be inherently flawed. Their performance degrades in a way that I haven't seen in other drives, and I've used plenty of cheap, DRAM-less SATA drives. I have the TLC version of the BX500 and it is without a doubt the worst SSD I've used. I would not recommend it for any purpose. Even the cheap Silicon Power drive sporting the same SMI controller but with QLC NAND runs circles around it in real world performance.

Sadly, the MX500 has been discontinued.

I bought this drive in the 2GB size a about a year ago. To say it's slow is being kind...it's GLACIAL. This drive is the patron saint of I/O wait. I just bought a Samsung EVO 870 to replace it. I regret the day the BX500 ever came into my life.

Buy this drive if you hate yourself.

This is a great write once read many drive. Hardware is slow, but it probably won't die. My 4 y.o. 1tb bx500 with qlc is doing great as a semi-permanent storage device. Other uses are not recommended

I know I did buy a MX500 a few years ago, and it must be in one of my PC's , and no problem with it.

I did check a 4TB model that is in my current PC and it's a Samsung SSD 870 EVO 4TB : 4000.7 GB... I mistakenly thought it was the MX500, but it is samsung 870 evo ... and have 22,948 hours on it with 99 percent good.

I will have to figure out where the MX500 is, because I should use it with the samsung.

So BX we should stay away from. The prices are coming down between 4th of July and amazon prime in a few days hopefully we will get some good super sales.

Was considering replacing 7x spinning 4tb drives in raid 6 with them….

But I need them to be cheap to justify a portion of the purchase price with future power savings

There were pretty bad freezing issues on BX500 under some scenarios:

Imagine that happening on RAID where disks start to drop out!

My sense is that SSD prices are getting ready to come down. More recent sales, and we had these current prices since the end of 2023.

So just figure out the models that would be acceptable to you, and wait patiently.

Where do you get this idea? Last I heard (a few months ago), NAND prices were forecast to drop in the short term, then rise again. Unless things have changed, I wouldn't expect things to get much better.
