For this money, you should get a drive with DRAM.

Ram instead of just a section of the drive itself where cache is wrote to

Any cheaper drive with a heat shield included would be a better buy

Like what exactly? Can you point me to any recent one that's 4tb with a heatsink for $200, at least 5000k read/write

Written… is written to.And no, you're conflating SLC cache with DRAM. DRAM contains the look-up tables for what is in each cell of the device. This uses System RAM instead, which makes it functionally identical to a DRAM drive, excepting the fact that it uses a small amount of system RAM.

You're right about DRAM vs pSLC, however HMB doesn't make things functionally identical to a drive having actual DRAM. HMB generally utilizes in the ballpark of 32-64MB of system RAM. Drives with DRAM ideally have a ratio of 1000:1 NANDBig GrinRAM. The 4TB 990 Pro has 4GB of DRAM, which is WAY more than 64MB of HMB. As far as the practical implications, most people are unlikely to notice the difference, but there will be edge cases.
