I prefer softside to hard side. It won't break or get super scratched and become trash. You can also stuff more into it. I don't get this trend with hard side luggage. Trends are so cyclical. I remember having hardside luggage in the 80s and 90s 😂
Many brands don't count the wheels. Airlines do count them. Easy way to spot over the limit bags is volume: compliant carry ons are no more than 40L (2441 cubic inches).
